Zadar, Dalmatia, Croatia

An ancient walled city jutting into the Adriatic, Zadar layers Roman columns onto Venetian streets — then ends each day with a sunset that Alfred Hitchcock once called the world's most beautiful. The Sea Organ plays it out loud.

Top Excursions

Zadar is a strong standalone port, but day trips to the Kornati archipelago and Krka waterfalls are genuinely spectacular.

Nature

Kornati National Park Boat Trip

The Kornati archipelago — 89 mostly uninhabited islands — sits an hour by boat from Zadar. Snorkel in crystal-clear water, lunch on fresh fish at a Robinson Crusoe–style konoba, and watch the karstic cliffs slide past. One of the Adriatic's great day trips.

⏱ Full day (8-10 hrs)🚢 Boat required🐟 Lunch usually included

Iconic

Roman Forum & Old Town Walk

Zadar's Roman Forum (Forum Zadar) is the largest on the eastern Adriatic coast — columns, paving stones, and a shaming post all still intact. Nearby: the Cathedral of St. Anastasia (Croatia's largest Romanesque church) and the cylindrical St. Donatus Church, built using Forum stones in the 9th century.

⏱ 2-3 hrs🚶 Easy, flat🏛️ Free entry to Forum

Nature

Krka National Park & Waterfalls

The cascading travertine waterfalls of Krka National Park (Skradinski Buk) are 75 km south of Zadar. A guided minibus excursion gets you there and back in time for ship departure. Note: swimming at Skradinski Buk has been banned since 2021 to protect the travertine — you'll walk the boardwalks rather than swim under the falls.

Culture

Sea Organ & Greeting to the Sun

Alfred Hitchcock called Zadar's sunset the world's most beautiful — architect Nikola Bašić built two installations to honor it. The Sea Organ (Morske orgulje) uses wave energy to play haunting chords from pipes beneath the marble steps. Just steps away, the Greeting to the Sun is a 22-meter solar-powered light circle that pulses after dark.

Dugi Otok & Saharun Beach

Dugi Otok ('Long Island') is 45 minutes by fast catamaran from Zadar. Its north tip holds Saharun, a shallow turquoise bay ringed by pine trees — consistently rated among Croatia's best beaches. Telašćica Nature Park on the south tip offers dramatic cliffs and a saltwater lake.

⏱ Full day🚢 Ferry/catamaran transfer🏖️ Stunning swimming

Insider Tips

  • 🚌
Shuttle vs. taxi: The ship shuttle is convenient but fills up fast. For a solo or couple arrival, a taxi from Gazenica is only €6–8 and faster than waiting for the shuttle queue.
  • 💶
Euro is king: Croatia joined the Eurozone in 2023. You'll pay in euros everywhere; ATMs are plentiful in the old town near Narodni Trg.
  • 🌅
Time the Riva: If your ship is in port for evening hours, the Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun are at their best after sunset — the light show starts automatically.
  • 🍸
Maraschino liqueur: Zadar is the birthplace of Luxardo Maraschino. Pick up a bottle at the market or a dedicated shop — it's a legitimate local souvenir.
  • Book island excursions early: Kornati and Dugi Otok tours sell out on busy port days. Book through your ship or a local operator before arriving.
