Getting Ashore

Willemstad is a docked port — all cruise ships berth at the Mega Pier on Sint Annabaai, just outside the historic city center.

Getting Ashore in Willemstad

  • 1
Walk or take the shuttleThe Mega Pier is roughly a 10-15 minute walk from the Queen Emma Bridge and Punda district. Most ships offer a free shuttle bus that drops you near the bridge. Taxis are also available at the pier gate for those who prefer.
  • 2
Cross into PundaThe Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge connects the Punda and Otrobanda districts across Sint Annabaai. When the bridge swings open for ship traffic (frequent), a free pedestrian ferry takes you across in under 2 minutes. No charge.
  • 3
Taxis and toursTaxis quote fixed rates — confirm before boarding. The island's best beaches (Cas Abao, Klein Knip, Grote Knip) are 30-45 minutes by taxi; negotiate a round-trip wait fare (~$60-80 for the car). Tour desks operate at the pier terminal.

💡 Pro move: The Mega Pier is a modern facility with shops, restaurants, and a pool inside the terminal — but the real Willemstad experience is the walk into Punda. Don't stay dockside the whole day.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
USD works everywhere. The Antillean guilder (ANG) is the official currency, but USD is universally accepted. Credit cards work at most shops and restaurants; bring small bills for market vendors and taxis.
  • 🌉
The Emma Bridge closes — use the ferry. The Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge swings open frequently to let ships pass through Sint Annabaai. A free pedestrian ferry takes you across in under 2 minutes. Don't panic; it's quick and part of the experience.
  • 🏖️
Beaches require a taxi. The city itself has no swimmable beach — Cas Abao, Klein Knip, and Grote Knip are 30-45 min west. Negotiate a round-trip taxi fare with wait time upfront (~$60-80 for the car, split among passengers).
  • ☀️
It's arid and sunny. Curaçao sits outside the hurricane belt and gets little rain year-round. It can be quite hot and windy — sunscreen is essential, and the trade winds make it feel cooler than it is.
  • 📷
Best Handelskade light is morning. The famous painted Dutch buildings face east — morning light makes for the most vivid photos. By midday, the buildings are in shade or harsh overhead light.
