Victoria, British Columbia, Canada cruise port

Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

British Columbia's postcard capital sits at the southern tip of Vancouver Island — all flower baskets, double-decker buses, and a harbour so photogenic it barely looks real. Most ships dock overnight or late evening, giving you unusually long time ashore.

Getting Ashore

Victoria is a docked port — ships tie up at Ogden Point, and a scenic waterfront path or a quick shuttle bus gets you downtown in minutes.

Getting Ashore in Victoria

  • 1
Walk off the shipOgden Point Cruise Terminal is a straightforward walk-off. The pier itself has a breakwater walkway with views of the Olympic Mountains. No tender required.
  • 2
Reach downtownThe Inner Harbour is about 1.5 km away. The Ogden Point shuttle (paid, runs frequently on ship days) drops you at the harbour in 5 minutes. The Breakwater Walk is a pleasant 20-minute stroll along the waterfront — flat and paved.
  • 3
Explore independently or by tourVictoria's old town, Beacon Hill Park, and the Royal BC Museum are walkable from the harbour. Butchart Gardens requires a bus, taxi, or ship's excursion — plan 3–4 hours round trip.

💡 Pro move: Victoria often receives ships for evening calls or overnight stays — check your ship's schedule, as you may have more time ashore than a typical Alaska port.

Insider Tips

  • 💰
Carry Canadian dollars or a card with no FX fees. USD is accepted in many shops but at unfavorable rates. ATMs and currency exchange are plentiful near the Inner Harbour.
  • 🫖
Book Empress tea in advance. The Fairmont Empress fills up on ship days. Reserve online before you arrive or accept a long wait — it's worth planning for.
  • 🌸
Butchart Gardens needs a half-day. Allow 3–4 hours including travel. Ship excursions are the easiest option; alternatively a taxi costs around $30–40 CAD each way.
  • 🚶
The breakwater walk is worth your time. The Ogden Point Breakwater offers great views and a calm introduction to the city — do it on the way to downtown rather than rushing straight for the shuttle.
  • 🐋
Whale watching is genuinely excellent here. Victoria has resident orca pods in the strait. Tours depart from the Inner Harbour and most see whales — this is one of Canada's best spots.
