Getting Ashore

Since the 2021 ban on large ships in the historic center, big cruise vessels dock at the mainland terminals of Marghera or Fusina; cruise-line shuttles (bus or boat) ferry passengers to Piazzale Roma at the edge of old Venice. Smaller ships still tie up at San Basilio inside the city.

Getting Into Venice

  • 1
Take the cruise-line shuttle to Piazzale RomaFrom Marghera or Fusina, board the shuttle bus or shuttle boat your cruise line provides — there is no walking route from these industrial terminals into Venice. Shuttles drop you at or near Piazzale Roma, the last point in Venice reachable by road.
  • 2
Take the vaporetto down the Grand CanalLine 1 runs from Piazzale Roma all the way to San Marco (St. Mark's Square) — slow and scenic, ~45 min, €9.50 one-way or €25 for a 24-hr pass. Line 2 is faster (~25 min). Buy tickets at the ACTV booths before boarding.
  • 3
Or walk from Piazzale Roma to St. Mark'sA well-signed 30-35 min walk via the Rialto Bridge is free and passes dozens of photogenic calli (alleys), markets, and bridges.
  • 4
San Basilio ships (Zattere)If your smaller ship docks at San Basilio/Zattere in Dorsoduro, you're already inside the city — St. Mark's is roughly a 20-25 minute walk east along the waterfront, or a short vaporetto hop.

💡 Pro move: No taxis or private cars enter Venice's historic center. Water taxis exist but are expensive (€70–100+ from Piazzale Roma to San Marco). The vaporetto is the real Venetian commute.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Large cruise ships are barred from Venice's historic center and now dock at the mainland industrial ports of Marghera or Fusina, with shuttle transfers; smaller ships still berth at San Basilio near the Zattere waterfront.

Insider Tips

  • 🎟️
Book St. Mark's and Doge's Palace ahead. Lines without reservations can be 1-2 hours, especially in summer. The Doge's Palace + Basilica combo online is about €35.
  • 🚤
Buy a 24-hour vaporetto pass (€25) if you plan to visit Murano or Burano — single tickets add up fast at €9.50 each.
  • 💶
Carry cash for cicchetti and small bacari. Many traditional wine bars still prefer cash for small orders. ATMs (Bancomats) are easy to find near the Rialto.
  • 🌡️
Summer is peak heat and crowds. Arrive early (terminal opens at 8 am), head straight to the major sights before noon, then retreat to quieter sestieri in the afternoon heat.
  • 👟
Wear comfortable, waterproof shoes. Venice floods seasonally (acqua alta) even in summer; wet stone bridges and cobblestones are unforgiving on dress shoes.
