Valencia, Valencian Community, Spain

Spain's third city fires on all cylinders — the birthplace of paella, home to one of Europe's most spectacular science museums, and graced with a long sandy beach just minutes from the Gothic old town.

Getting Ashore

All cruise ships dock at Valencia's Muelle de Poniente terminal inside the working commercial port, about 5 km south of the historic city center. A free shuttle or short taxi ride connects you to the old town.

Getting from the cruise terminal to the city

  • 1
Shuttle bus to the centerMany cruise lines run a free shuttle from the ship to a central drop-off (often near Plaça de l'Ajuntament or Plaça de la Reina). If yours doesn't, the official Valencia Cruise Card (~€10, sold at the port tourist desk) includes a coach shuttle to the city center. Check the board at the terminal exit for the current schedule.
  • 2
Taxi or ride-hailingTaxis queue outside the terminal and run roughly €15–25 to the old town (includes a ~€3 cruise-terminal surcharge), a bit less to Playa de la Malvarrosa. Cabify also operates in Valencia.
  • 3
Walking or cyclingThe terminal is not convenient to walk into town, but Valencia has a public bike-share (Valenbisi). A short taxi to the old town and then cycling the Turia riverbed gardens is a popular combo.

💡 Pro move: The port entrance gate is about a 10-minute walk from the ship — follow terminal staff signs. Wear comfortable shoes; Valencia's old town is very walkable once you're there.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Valencia is an all-docked port — no tendering — with large ships using the Muelle de Poniente cruise berths inside the main commercial harbour.

Insider Tips

  • 🍽️
Eat paella at lunch, not dinner. Locals consider paella a midday dish. For the real thing, head to a traditional restaurant in El Palmar village on the Albufera or along the Malvarrosa beachfront.
  • 🕙
Mercado Central opens early but closes by 3pm. Arrive before noon to see it at its best and to buy saffron, smoked paprika, and local almonds at fair prices.
  • 🚕
Taxis from the terminal are metered and honest. Expect €15–25 to the old town, including a small cruise-terminal surcharge. Agree on the destination before you get in.
  • ☀️
Valencia gets hot June–September. Wear sunscreen and a hat; the old town has little shade. The Turia gardens provide the best relief.
  • 🎨
Book the Oceanogràfic ahead of time. It's Europe's largest aquarium and sells out on busy port days. Pre-purchase tickets online or via your ship's excursion desk.
