Getting Ashore

Ushuaia is one of the easiest ports in Patagonia — ships dock at the Muelle Comercial right in the heart of town, so you step off and you're already there.

Step off the ship, into the city

  • 1
The commercial pier (Muelle Comercial)Most cruise ships berth here, a 5-minute flat walk to San Martín, the main street. A small tourist info kiosk sits at the pier gate with maps and tour touts.
  • 2
Tendering on busy daysOn multi-ship days or with the largest vessels, some ships tender to the pier. It's a short hop — confirm tender tickets onboard.
  • 3
Getting to the National ParkTierra del Fuego National Park is ~12 km west. Taxis, remises (private cars), and the heritage End of the World train all run from town; many tours include round-trip transport.

💡 Pro move: USD and even euros are widely accepted, but you'll get better value paying in pesos or by card. Carry small bills for the pier-side craft stalls and the famous king crab (centolla) lunch.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Ushuaia's commercial pier sits at the foot of the city, so nearly every ship docks within a 5-minute walk of San Martín street. It's also the world's busiest Antarctic embarkation port.

Insider Tips

  • 🦀
Eat the centolla (king crab). Ushuaia is one of the best places on Earth for it — a fresh king-crab lunch on San Martín is practically mandatory.
  • 🧥
Layer up, even in summer. Weather here turns fast — sun, wind, and rain in one afternoon. A waterproof shell and warm mid-layer are essential year-round.
  • 🐧
Book the Beagle Channel early. The catamaran cruises and penguin trips sell out on cruise days — reserve ahead rather than gambling on the pier.
  • 💵
USD and cards work, but pesos stretch further. Many shops quote in dollars at a poor rate; paying by card or in pesos is usually cheaper.
  • 🚕
Share a taxi to the trailheads. Taxis to the Martial Glacier or park entrance are inexpensive split between a few people — far cheaper than a booked tour if you just want the hike.
