Tangier, Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma, Morocco

Gateway between Europe and Africa, Tangier sits where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic — an ancient port city of labyrinthine souks, whitewashed kasbah walls, and views stretching all the way to Spain.

⚓ Docked (cruise terminal)🕒 Typical call: 8-10 hrs💵 Currency: Moroccan Dirham (MAD)🗣️ Language: Arabic, French, Spanish
Docking
Ships dock at Tangier Ville port — the city cruise terminal, walking distance to the medina.
Walk to center
15-20 min on foot from the port gate to the Grand Socco (main square).
Best For
Medina exploration, Moroccan souks, historic kasbah, day trips to Cape Spartel.
Don't Miss
The Kasbah Museum, Grand Socco, and the Caves of Hercules at Cap Spartel.

Getting Ashore

Cruise ships dock at Tangier Ville, the city's main port — right at the base of the medina hill.

Getting Ashore in Tangier

  • 1
Clear the port gateAfter docking, walk through the terminal building and out the port gate onto Avenue Mohammed VI. Allow 10 minutes from ship to gate.
  • 2
Walk or taxi to the medinaThe Grand Socco (Place du Grand Socco) is a 15–20 minute flat walk north along the seafront boulevard, or a 5-minute petit taxi ride (agree fare first — typically 15–20 MAD).
  • 3
Use petit taxis for longer tripsSmall red taxis (petits taxis) serve city trips. For Cape Spartel (14 km west), hire a grand taxi — negotiate a round-trip price, roughly 200–300 MAD.

💡 Pro move: Tangier port has official guides available near the gate. Independent walking is easy in daylight but expect persistent offers of 'free' guidance — a firm but polite no is fine.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Insider Tips

  • 💱
Exchange dirhams at the port or ATMs. Morocco's currency (MAD) isn't freely traded abroad — exchange on arrival. ATMs at the terminal area and Grand Socco are reliable.
  • 🧭
Navigation in the medina is confusing by design. Download Maps.me or Google Maps offline before you go — GPS still works in the lanes even without data.
  • 🛍️
Bargain in the souks — but reasonably. Prices are negotiable; starting at 50–60% of the asking price is normal. Refuse politely and walk away if needed.
  • 🚕
Petits taxis are cheap and useful. Short city rides rarely exceed 20–25 MAD. Always agree the fare before getting in — meters are not always used for tourists.
  • 🕌
Dress modestly in the medina. Covered shoulders and knees are respectful. The area is well-used by locals and modesty is appreciated.
