St. Anthony, Newfoundland, Canada

At the northern tip of Newfoundland, St. Anthony is the gateway to the only authenticated Viking settlement in North America — and on the right day, drifting icebergs and breaching humpbacks come free of charge.

Getting Ashore

St. Anthony has a small town wharf that can accommodate some cruise ships at the dock; others anchor and tender passengers ashore. Confirm your ship's arrangement before the call — this is a working fishing port, not a purpose-built cruise terminal.

Getting into town

  • 1
Docking or tenderingLarger expedition and small luxury ships often dock at the St. Anthony town wharf. Bigger vessels may anchor in the harbor and run tenders. Either way you arrive near the town center.
  • 2
The town centerSt. Anthony is a compact small town. The Grenfell Historic Properties, a handful of restaurants, and the Fishing Point coastal trail are all within easy walking distance of the wharf.
  • 3
L'Anse aux Meadows by tour or taxiThe UNESCO Viking site is about 30–45 minutes north by road (~47 km). Most cruisers book a ship's excursion or a local taxi/tour. There is no public bus service.

💡 Pro move: This is a remote port with limited services. Bring Canadian cash for small purchases — card acceptance can be patchy at local vendors. Cell service is available but spotty in some areas.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

St. Anthony's town wharf can berth small and mid-size expedition ships; larger vessels anchor and tender — check your ship's port notes ahead of time.

Top Excursions

St. Anthony punches well above its size: a UNESCO world heritage site, some of the world's best iceberg viewing, and whale-rich waters all within reach of a single port call.

Sir Wilfred Grenfell came to this remote coast in the 1890s as a medical missionary and built hospitals, schools, and cooperatives. The Grenfell Interpretation Centre and Grenfell House Museum tell the story of his extraordinary legacy in this part of Newfoundland.

Insider Tips

  • 🧊
Iceberg timing matters. Prime iceberg season is late May through late June; by mid-July most have melted past. If your cruise falls in that window, a boat tour is unmissable.
  • 🚗
L'Anse aux Meadows requires wheels. The Viking site is ~35 min by road — book a ship's excursion, a local taxi, or a guided tour in advance. There's no public transport.
  • 💵
Bring Canadian cash. St. Anthony is a small, remote town. Some local vendors and tour operators prefer or only accept cash; the nearest ATM is in town near the Grenfell Centre.
  • 🧥
Dress for subarctic conditions. Even in summer, northern Newfoundland is cool, windy, and prone to sudden fog. A warm layer, windproof jacket, and sturdy shoes are essential.
  • 🐋
Watch from Fishing Point for free. Humpbacks regularly feed just offshore in summer — the coastal trail gives good sightlines without paying for a boat tour.
  • Confirm tender vs. dock before you go ashore. The berthing situation varies by ship size. Check the daily program the night before so you know when tenders start and the last boat time.
