Split, Dalmatia, Croatia

A Roman emperor's retirement palace turned living city — Split's old town is Diocletian's Palace, a 1,700-year-old UNESCO labyrinth where people still live, eat, and drink among ancient columns.

Getting Ashore

Cruise ships berth at the Split International Passenger Terminal (Gat Sv. Duje), right on the Riva waterfront — the old town and Diocletian's Palace are a 5-minute walk from the gangway.

Pier to Diocletian's Palace — it's a short walk

  • 1
Walk the Riva promenadeExit the terminal and turn left onto the Riva, Split's palm-lined seafront promenade. Walk east for about 5 minutes; the Bronze Gate — the southern sea-facing entrance to Diocletian's Palace — is directly ahead. Free to enter; the Palace interior is open at all hours.
  • 2
Old Town orientationInside the Bronze Gate you pass through the Palace substructures (the vaulted cellar halls); a staircase leads up to the Vestibule and the Peristyle, the central courtyard. The Cathedral of Saint Domnius (built inside Diocletian's mausoleum), Jupiter's Temple, and the Golden Gate are all within a few minutes on foot. No tickets needed to roam the streets — admission fees apply to specific sites.
  • 3
Taxis and ferries for day tripsThe Split Ferry Terminal (Trajektna luka) is immediately adjacent to the cruise pier — ferries to Hvar Town and other islands depart from here. Taxis and rideshare (Bolt) queue outside the terminal; the bus station is a 10-minute walk north along the waterfront.

💡 Pro move: Split has one of the most central cruise piers in the Mediterranean. Almost nothing requires a shuttle or taxi — the entire old town is walkable from the gangway.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

All cruise ships dock directly on the Riva waterfront, within a 5-minute walk of Diocletian's Palace and the old town — no shuttle required.

Split rewards walkers, but the Dalmatian islands just offshore make some of the best half-day trips in the Mediterranean.

History

Diocletian's Palace Self-Guided Walk

The Palace is not a museum you visit — it's the living old town. Wander the Peristyle, descend into the remarkably preserved basement vaults (substructures entry ~€8), climb the Cathedral bell tower for views over the rooftops, and duck into the tiny streets where locals hang laundry between 1,700-year-old walls.

Trogir UNESCO Town

Just 27 km from Split, Trogir is a tiny island city whose medieval core is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cathedral of St. Lawrence (Romanesque portal) and the compact old town make it a superb half-day trip by taxi (~€30–35 one-way) or local bus (line 37, ~€3).

Self-Guided Walks & Hikes

Split's old town is perfectly sized for walking — the entire Palace complex, Meštrović Gallery, and Marjan Hill are all reachable on foot from the pier.

Riva to the Peristyle — Heart of the Palace

~500 m · 10 min · flat · easy

Walk east along the Riva from the pier to the Bronze Gate (southern Palace entrance). Step through into the vaulted basement vestibule, then climb the stairs to the Peristyle — the ancient courtyard where emperors received guests, now ringed by café tables. The Cathedral of Saint Domnius and Jupiter's Temple are right here.

Palace to Marjan Hill Viewpoint

~2 km one-way · 45 min · uphill · moderate

Exit the Palace via the Iron Gate (western side) to the People's Square (Narodni Trg), then head west through the Varoš neighbourhood and up the wooded slopes of Marjan Hill. The terrace at Telegrin viewpoint gives a panorama over Split's rooftops, the Riva, and the Dalmatian islands.

Insider Tips

  • 🚢
The pier is central — almost no transit needed. Diocletian's Palace is a 5-minute walk from the gangway. You can spend a full day in the old town and islands without ever booking a transfer.
  • Hvar ferry departs from the terminal right next to your ship. Buy tickets at the Jadrolinija booth near the terminal entrance. Check the return timetable carefully — last catamaran back to Split is typically late afternoon.
  • 💶
Croatia switched to the Euro in January 2023. The Kuna is no longer accepted. Cards are widely accepted in Split; cash is handy for the market and smaller konobas.
  • 🌡️
Summer is hot and crowded. The Palace alleys heat up quickly in July–August. Go early, wear light clothing, and bring water — shade is limited on the Riva at midday.
  • 🎶
The Klapa singers on the Peristyle are the real deal. A cappella Dalmatian folk singing (klapa) is a UNESCO Intangible Heritage tradition. Performances happen organically in the Peristyle courtyard — free to watch.
