Santa Cruz de la Palma, La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain

La Palma is the greenest and least-visited of the main Canary Islands, and its capital delivers a rare prize: a perfectly preserved 16th-century colonial town a five-minute walk from the cruise pier.

Getting Ashore

Ships dock at the commercial pier in the heart of town — no tender, no shuttle, just a short walk to the city centre.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Exit the pier gateThe pier gate opens onto the southern end of Avenida Marítima. The old town begins immediately to your right.
  • 2
Walk Avenida MarítimaThe seafront promenade — lined with 16th-century houses featuring intricate carved-wood balconies — leads you north to the main square in about 10 minutes on foot.
  • 3
Plaza de España & beyondThe colonial plaza is the hub for taxis, tour meeting points, and the tourist information office. Excursion vehicles depart from the harbour area.

💡 Pro move: La Palma has no large all-inclusive tourist resort strip — the island is genuinely local, which means cash (euros) is useful in smaller shops and markets.

Insider Tips

  • 🚶
Skip the excursion buses if you love architecture. The old town is arguably the best free sight on the island — give it at least 90 minutes before heading elsewhere.
  • 💶
Bring some cash euros. Local stalls, the covered market (Mercado Municipal), and small cigar workshops often don't take cards.
  • 🌋
Check eruption status before booking volcano hikes. The Cumbre Vieja area saw a major eruption in 2021; some trails near the lava flows remain restricted. Check with the national park office.
  • 🚗
A rental car unlocks the island. The LP-1 and LP-2 ring roads are excellent and traffic is light — a self-drive day to the Caldera viewpoint and back is very manageable.
  • 🌤️
La Palma is the greenest Canary Island — that means it can be cloudy in the north and mountains while the coast is sunny. Dress in layers if heading inland.
