San Juan, Puerto Rico, USA

Puerto Rico's capital is one of the easiest cruise calls in the Caribbean — Old San Juan's blue cobblestones, towering Spanish forts, and rum bars start just steps from the pier.

Getting Ashore

Most cruise ships dock at the Old San Juan piers (Piers 1, 3, 4 and 6) along Calle La Marina on the south edge of the walled city — you walk straight into the historic district. A few larger or homeport ships use the separate Pan American Pier on Isla Grande, across the bay, which needs a short taxi to Old San Juan.

Getting Ashore in San Juan

  • 1
Walk off the shipNo tenders. The Old San Juan piers (1, 3, 4, 6) put you directly at the foot of the walled city. The port gate opens to Calle La Marina along the waterfront. If your ship is assigned the Pan American Pier on Isla Grande instead, it's a 10–15 min taxi to Old San Juan.
  • 2
Enter Old San JuanTurn left on Paseo de la Princesa — a shaded promenade — and follow it to the walled city. Plaza de Armas is about a 10-minute walk.
  • 3
Taxis and rideshareWhite tourist taxis queue at the pier exit with fixed rates posted; Uber also operates in San Juan. Condado Beach is about 15 min / $15–20 by taxi.
  • 4
TrolleyA free Old San Juan trolley loops through the historic district — handy for the uphill climbs. Stops are marked on port maps.

💡 Pro move: Puerto Rico is a US territory — US citizens need no passport and there is no customs check. All other nationals follow standard US entry requirements.

Insider Tips

  • ☀️
Start early. El Morro is far cooler — and far less crowded — before 10 AM. The cruise pier fills up mid-morning; head to the fort first, explore Old San Juan on the way back.
  • 💵
USD everywhere. Puerto Rico uses US dollars. ATMs are abundant in Old San Juan. No currency exchange needed for US visitors.
  • 🌧️
Rain squalls are brief. San Juan averages rain year-round, but showers typically last 20–30 minutes. A light layer or compact umbrella handles it.
  • Bacardí ferry is easy. A public ferry from Pier 2 (near the cruise docks) crosses to Cataño for about $0.50 each way — direct access to the Casa Bacardí distillery without needing a taxi.
  • 🚌
El Yunque logistics matter. Getting to El Yunque independently is possible but slow. Booking through your ship or a local operator ensures a guide and return transport that won't miss all-aboard.
