Salaverry, Peru

A working industrial port on Peru's north coast, Salaverry is your gateway to Trujillo — a colonial city ringed by the greatest adobe ruins on Earth and a beach where fishermen still ride reed boats.

Getting Ashore

Salaverry is a functional cargo and cruise port — there is no walkable town center or tourist district at the pier. All major attractions are 15–30 km away around Trujillo, so you'll need a ship excursion, pre-booked private tour, or a taxi.

From the industrial pier to Peru's ancient cities

  • 1
Disembark at the commercial pierShips dock directly at the Salaverry port wharf. The terminal area is basic; port agents and tour operators typically meet guests dockside. There is no walking into town from here.
  • 2
Shuttle or tour bus to TrujilloShip-organized shuttles drop passengers at Trujillo's Plaza de Armas (~20 min). Private taxis are available at the gate — agree on a fare in Soles before you get in. Ride-shares work with data or port Wi-Fi.
  • 3
Plan your route before you goChan Chan, the Moche pyramids, and Huanchaco beach each require a separate stop. Most passengers do one or two sites on a guided tour, or hire a driver for a half-day circuit covering all three.

💡 Pro move: Bring Peruvian Soles — many taxis, market stalls, and site entrances are cash-only. ATMs are available in Trujillo's city center. Watch the clock: Trujillo traffic can be slow, and the pier closes on schedule.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Salaverry is a single commercial port — all cruise ships dock at the main industrial berth. There are no tender operations; the challenge is the transfer to sights, not the landing itself.

Top Excursions

The north coast of Peru holds some of South America's most remarkable ancient heritage. From the vast Chimú adobe city of Chan Chan to the painted Moche pyramids and a beach where reed-boat fishing is unchanged after 3,000 years, a day in Salaverry rewards the curious traveler deeply.

History

Chan Chan: The Great Adobe City

The largest pre-Columbian city in South America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chan Chan was the capital of the Chimú Kingdom (900–1470 AD). Its labyrinthine royal compounds — walls covered in geometric friezes of fish, birds, and sea creatures — stretch across 20 km². The restored Tschudi Complex gives a vivid sense of imperial scale.

Trujillo Colonial City & Marinera

Peru's third-largest city wears its Spanish colonial past proudly: the Plaza de Armas is lined with candy-colored baroque mansions (casonas) and the yellow Cathedral of Trujillo. Trujillo is also the birthplace of the Marinera, Peru's national dance — a graceful, flirtatious courtship dance often performed in the plaza.

Huaca del Sol y de la Luna

Two massive mud-brick pyramids built by the Moche civilization (100–800 AD) rise from the desert south of Trujillo. The Huaca de la Luna is the star — its excavated walls reveal layer upon layer of vivid polychrome murals depicting the fanged deity Ai Apaec. Active archaeological digs continue on-site.

Huanchaco Beach & Caballitos de Totora

A laid-back fishing village and surf town just north of Trujillo, Huanchaco is famous for the caballitos de totora — slender reed boats that local fishermen have paddled through the surf for over 3,000 years. Watch them ride the waves at dawn, stroll the promenade, and try ceviche at a beachfront cevichería.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Change money or withdraw Soles in Trujillo before heading to sites — Chan Chan and the Moche pyramids charge entrance fees in PEN and some don't accept cards.
  • 🌞
The north coast of Peru is sunny and dry year-round but surprisingly cool from May–October due to the Humboldt Current. Sunscreen is essential even on overcast days.
  • 🕐
Build buffer time: Trujillo city traffic and the distances between sites add up. Leave at least 90 minutes to return to the pier before all-aboard.
  • 🦟
If combining sites with Huanchaco, eat ceviche at the beach — the fish is ultra-fresh and made with local leche de tigre. Avoid raw seafood at unmarked roadside stalls.
  • 📸
Photography is free at Chan Chan and the Moche pyramids. Hiring a local bilingual guide (available at the entrance of both sites) dramatically enriches the experience.
