Getting Ashore

Ships dock at the Civitavecchia cruise terminal; getting into Rome takes about an hour each way, so plan an early start.

Getting from the Ship to Rome

  • 1
Walk or shuttle to Civitavecchia train stationThe port gate is roughly 1 km from the train station — either walk along the waterfront or take the port shuttle bus (€2–3 oneway, available near the terminal exit).
  • 2
Take the regional train to Rome TerminiTrenitalia regional trains (R) run every 30–60 min and reach Roma Termini in about 1 hr 15 min; tickets cost ~€5–9 each way. Buy at the station ticket machine or app. Faster Intercity trains (~50 min) cost more but save time.
  • 3
From Termini, use Metro or taxi into the cityMetro Line A (direction Battistini) stops at Ottaviano (Vatican) and Spagna (Spanish Steps). Taxi from Termini to Colosseum is €12–18. Ride-share (FREE Now, Uber) also available.
  • 4
Ship excursion or private driverShip-organized Rome tours handle logistics (guaranteed return) but move at group pace. Private car/driver services from Civitavecchia port are popular and cost €150–250 for 1–4 people for a full day — book in advance.

💡 Pro move: Allow at least 2 hours of buffer before all-aboard. Train delays happen — if the ship clears by 17:00, aim to leave Rome by 14:30 at the latest.

Insider Tips

  • 🕐
Start early and build in buffer time. Rome is 80 km from the port — trains run roughly hourly. If all-aboard is 18:00, leave Rome by 15:00 at the very latest. Missing the ship in Rome means an expensive overnight.
  • 🎟️
Pre-book Colosseum and Vatican tickets before you sail. Both sell out weeks in advance. Walk-up queues can be 2–3 hours. Use the official sites (coopculture.it, museivaticani.va) or a reputable tour operator.
  • 💶
Cash is helpful but cards are widely accepted. ATMs are plentiful in Rome. Avoid the currency exchange booths at Termini — rates are poor. Notify your bank before travel.
  • 🥤
Drink from the nasoni. Rome has hundreds of free public drinking fountains (nasoni) throughout the historic centre — the water is excellent and cold. Carry a reusable bottle.
  • 🚔
Watch for pickpockets at Termini and on the Metro. Keep bags in front, use inside pockets for valuables. The tourist areas around the Colosseum and Vatican attract skilled pickpockets.
