Getting Ashore

Palmarola has no pier and no permanent settlement — cruise ships anchor offshore and tender passengers into one of the island's sheltered coves, most commonly Cala del Porto on the eastern side.

Tender to Cala del Porto

  • 1
Collect your tender ticketThe ship anchors off Palmarola's eastern coast. Collect a tender ticket early; with no dock infrastructure, boarding can be slow. The tender ride takes roughly 10–15 minutes depending on where the ship anchors.
  • 2
Cala del Porto landingTenders land at Cala del Porto, the island's only real sand-and-pebble beach, flanked by soft volcanic cliffs with ancient cave-houses (case grotta) carved into them. The island's sole seasonal restaurant operates here in summer — outside peak season expect minimal services.
  • 3
Explore by waterThe island's best features — grottos, hidden coves, and the dramatic western cliffs — are only accessible by boat. Many ships offer tender tours around the island; small water taxis may also be available at the cove.

💡 Pro move: Palmarola is a nature reserve. There are no roads, no ATMs, and almost no services outside the single seasonal restaurant at Cala del Porto. Bring cash, sun protection, water shoes, and snorkel gear. Swimming directly from the tender landing is excellent.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Top Excursions

Palmarola is pure nature: the excursions are all about the water, the cliffs, and the grottos.

Nature

La Cattedrale & Sea Cave Circuit

The island's most famous feature is La Cattedrale (The Cathedral) — soaring basalt cliffs sculpted into fissures and arches that resemble the naves of a Gothic cathedral, best appreciated by swimming or snorkelling through its 'aisles'. A boat tour around the island visits La Cattedrale plus the Grotta del Gatto and the Grottone di Mezzogiorno sea caves carved into the volcanic cliffs.

Relax

Swimming & Snorkelling at Cala del Porto

The cove where tenders land has exceptionally clear water — visibility of 15–20 metres is common. The rocky seafloor hosts sea urchins, octopus, rainbow wrasse, and bream. Snorkel gear is essential and often available to rent from the seasonal beach operators.

Adventure

Circumnavigation by Kayak or RIB

A full circuit of Palmarola by kayak or rigid inflatable reveals the rugged western cliffs — the island's most dramatic scenery — plus sea stacks, arches, and remote coves that are inaccessible on foot. Ships or local operators may offer guided excursions.

Cliff Walk & Island Viewpoints

A rough footpath from Cala del Porto climbs the eastern ridge — passing near the San Silverio shrine — to elevated viewpoints over the Tyrrhenian Sea and, on clear days, toward Ponza island and the mainland. The terrain is rocky and uneven — sturdy shoes are essential.

Lunch at a Seasonal Beach Restaurant

A handful of seasonal trattorie operate on the island in summer, serving grilled fish caught the same morning, pasta with clams, and local white wine. Expect simple, excellent food — and no menus, just whatever the boats brought in.

Self-Guided Walks & Hikes

Palmarola has no roads and only rough footpaths — the one worthwhile walk climbs from the cove to the ridge for sea views.

Cala del Porto to the Eastern Ridge

~1.5 km return · 45–60 min · moderate (rocky terrain)

From the tender landing at Cala del Porto, a marked but rough path climbs the eastern hillside through Mediterranean scrub — maquis, wild capers, and rosemary — toward the San Silverio shrine and a ridge with panoramic views over the Tyrrhenian Sea. Wear proper shoes; flip-flops are not suitable.

Insider Tips

  • 👟
Leave the flip-flops on the ship. The tender landing is rocky and the walking paths are rough. Water shoes for swimming and closed-toe shoes for the trail are the right call.
  • 🌊
Bring your own snorkel gear. Rental equipment is available in summer but not guaranteed. The water clarity here is exceptional — don't miss it.
  • 💶
Cash only. The seasonal beach bars and boat operators work exclusively with cash. There are no ATMs on the island. Bring euros from the ship or from your last port.
  • ☀️
Sun exposure is intense. There is almost no shade on Palmarola outside the grottos. Sunscreen, a hat, and a cover-up are essential — the pale volcanic rock and water reflect even more UV.
  • 🚢
Tender timing matters. With no pier, tendering can be slow, especially in swell. Keep a close eye on the last tender time — monitor ship announcements and don't cut it close.
