Getting Ashore

Naples' Stazione Marittima sits right in the centre of the city — you walk off the ship and you're already there.

Getting Ashore in Naples

  • 1
Stazione Marittima terminalAll major cruise lines dock at the modern Stazione Marittima terminal on Piazza Municipio. The terminal has taxis, tour buses, and shuttle services waiting outside.
  • 2
On foot to the historic centrePiazza del Plebiscito and the Royal Palace are a 12-minute walk from the pier. Via Toledo, Naples' main shopping street, is equally close.
  • 3
Train to PompeiiThe Circumvesuviana railway runs from Napoli Porta Nolana (20-min walk or short taxi) to Pompeii Scavi in about 35 minutes. Buy tickets at the station. Allow 5-6 hrs round trip.
  • 4
Taxi & tour busesOfficial white taxis wait at the terminal. Agree the price before you get in, or insist on the meter. Shared excursion buses for Amalfi and Pompeii depart from the terminal forecourt.

💡 Pro move: Naples traffic can be heavy. Leave plenty of buffer time to be back by All Aboard — 45 minutes minimum from the city centre.

Top Excursions

Naples is the launchpad for some of Italy's greatest day trips — Pompeii, Herculaneum, the Amalfi Coast, and Capri are all within reach.

History

Pompeii & Herculaneum

The ancient Roman cities buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and among the best-preserved archaeological sites on Earth. Pompeii is larger; Herculaneum is smaller and better preserved. Go early to beat crowds.

Amalfi Coast Drive

The cliff-hugging road linking Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello is one of Italy's most scenic drives. Best done by hired car or organised excursion — the road is narrow and public buses can be very slow.

Iconic

Island of Capri

The legendary island with its Blue Grotto sea cave, designer boutiques, and dramatic clifftop views. Ferries run from Molo Beverello (10-min walk from the terminal). Allow at least 5 hours on the island.

Insider Tips

  • 🍕
Eat pizza before anything else. Naples invented pizza margherita. Go to L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele or Sorbillo on Via Tribunali — expect a queue, worth every minute.
  • 🎟️
Book Pompeii tickets in advance. The site has timed-entry tickets; buying online at coopculture.it avoids queues and guarantees entry during peak season.
  • 🚕
Taxis: meter or fixed fare. Official white taxis have fixed fares to major destinations (Pompeii, Capri ferry, Amalfi). Agree before you depart — the meter is often cheaper within the city.
  • Build in buffer time. Naples traffic and Circumvesuviana delays are real. Plan to be back at the terminal 60 minutes before All Aboard, not 15.
  • 👜
Watch your belongings in the centro storico. Naples has a pick-pocket reputation — use a crossbody bag, keep phones in a pocket, and be alert on the Circumvesuviana train.
