Marseille, Provence, France

France's oldest city and its most visceral — a gritty, gorgeous port where bouillabaisse was invented, the Calanques begin, and 26 centuries of history press close.

Getting Ashore

Large cruise ships dock at the MPCT terminal (Môle Léon Gourret) about 8 km north of the city in an industrial port zone — not walkable. A free shuttle drops you near the Joliette district, a short walk or metro hop from the Vieux-Port.

Getting from the cruise terminal to the city

  • 1
MPCT terminal (most cruise lines)Most large ships — MSC, Costa, Norwegian, Princess, Celebrity — dock at the Marseille Provence Cruise Terminal (MPCT) on Môle Léon Gourret, about 8 km north of the Vieux-Port inside an active commercial port. It is not walkable to the city; follow the painted line ~1.5 km to Gate 4 for the shuttle.
  • 2
Free shuttle to JolietteA complimentary cruise-day shuttle runs from Gate 4 to the Joliette district near Les Terrasses du Port shopping centre (every 20–30 min, roughly 9am–5pm). From the drop-off, the Vieux-Port is about a 15-minute walk, or one metro stop on Line 2.
  • 3
Taxi or ride-hailingTaxis queue outside the terminal and run roughly €17–25 to the Vieux-Port depending on traffic. Uber and FreeNow also work. Some smaller and mid-size ships instead use the Joliette (J4) terminal, only ~1.5 km from the Old Port and walkable in 20–30 minutes.

💡 Pro move: Marseille has a reputation for petty theft — keep bags closed and phones pocketed in the La Canebière area and around the port market stalls.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

All cruise ships dock — no tendering — but most large ships use the MPCT terminal ~8 km north of the city, while some smaller vessels use the closer Joliette terminal near the Old Port.

Nature

Calanques National Park Boat Tour

The creamy white limestone fjords east of Marseille are one of France's great natural spectacles. A 2-hour boat tour from the Vieux-Port passes the most dramatic inlets — Calanque de Sormiou, En-Vau, and Morgiou — without the hiking.

Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde

Marseille's gilded hilltop basilica — 'La Bonne Mère' — is the city's spiritual anchor and its best viewpoint. Take a taxi or the tourist train up; the 360° panorama over the port, islands, and Mediterranean is unmissable.

MuCEM & the Historic Harbour

The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MuCEM) is a landmark building right at the port entrance, connected by walkway to the 17th-century Fort Saint-Jean. Together they make a compelling 2-hour cultural stop a short walk from the Vieux-Port.

Self-Guided Walks & Hikes

The Vieux-Port is the natural hub — most walks radiate from the old harbour's quays into the Panier district, up to the Garde basilica, or west to MuCEM.

Insider Tips

  • 🐟
Book bouillabaisse in advance. Authentic versions at Chez Fonfon, Le Miramar, or Péron must be ordered ahead — they don't serve it to walk-ins on busy port days.
  • 🛡️
Watch your belongings around La Canebière, the fish market, and busy tourist spots. Marseille is lively but opportunistic theft is real — zip up bags and avoid showing valuables.
  • 🚕
Taxis are metered and reliable from the cruise terminal — budget roughly €17–25 to the Vieux-Port, as the MPCT berth sits ~8 km north of the city. Uber and FreeNow also work; avoid unofficial 'taxis' offering flat rates outside the terminal.
  • 🌊
Calanques access changes seasonally. In summer (July–Sept), hiking trails into the calanques may be restricted due to fire risk — boat tours remain available. Check before planning a hike.
  • 🚆
Train to Aix is fast and cheap — buses and trains run frequently from Gare de Marseille-Saint-Charles for under €10 each way. Factor in the shuttle or taxi from the MPCT terminal to the station first (~€15–20 by taxi).
