Kythira Island, Ionian Islands, Greece

Getting Ashore

Kythira has no deep-water cruise pier — ships anchor and tender passengers to one of two landing spots depending on vessel size and wind.

Getting Ashore at Kythira

  • 1
Tender to Kapsali (small/luxury ships)Boutique vessels anchor in the scenic south bay and tender directly to the Kapsali quay. You land steps from the double beach with Chora castle towering above.
  • 2
Tender to Diakofti (larger ships)The main commercial harbour on the east coast accepts tenders from larger ships. The port area has a beautiful turquoise beach and a couple of tavernas, but you'll need a taxi or rental car to reach Chora or other sights.
  • 3
Onward transportThe island has very limited public transit. Pre-book a rental car to meet you at the pier, or arrange a day-taxi at the pier (book a return time — there are fewer than a dozen island taxis).

💡 Pro move: Kythira is notorious for the Meltemi wind. If conditions deteriorate, the tender point may switch between Kapsali and Diakofti, or the ship may abbreviate the call.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Kythira is a tender-only port; all cruise ships anchor and ferry passengers ashore by small boat.

Insider Tips

  • 🚗
Rent a car: It's the only practical way to see the island independently. Pre-book and ask the agency to meet you at the tender pier — Kythira is large and hilly with almost no buses.
  • 🚕
Taxis are scarce: Fewer than a dozen island taxis exist. If you arrange a taxi, confirm a precise pick-up time and location — missing your ship is a real risk.
  • 💨
Wind watch: The Meltemi can strengthen quickly and affect tendering. Monitor ship announcements; the tender point may change from Kapsali to Diakofti mid-call.
  • 👟
Wear proper shoes: Chora's cobblestones and the castle path are steep and uneven. Leave flip-flops for the beach.
  • 🍯
Buy local honey: Kythira's wild-thyme honey is considered among Greece's finest. Pick up a jar in Chora shops — it travels well and makes an excellent souvenir.
