Getting Ashore

Kotor has a single quay beside the Old Town walls — smaller ships dock alongside, while larger ships (or when several are in port) anchor in the bay and tender to the same pier. Either way you're exploring within minutes of stepping off.

Getting Ashore in Kotor

  • 1
Exit the terminalWhether you walk off a docked ship or arrive by tender, you'll land at the quay just outside the walls. Turn toward the city walls along the waterfront promenade.
  • 2
Enter through the Sea Gate (Vrata od Mora)The main entrance to the Old Town is the 16th-century Sea Gate, a 5-minute walk from the pier. This is the natural starting point for exploring.
  • 3
Collect a town mapFree or low-cost maps are available just inside the Sea Gate or at the tourist information point near the pier. The Old Town is small — you can't really get lost.
  • 4
Fortress hike accessSigns inside the Old Town point to the start of the fortress stairway. There is an entry fee of around €15 in high season (May–Sept). Allow 1–1.5 hrs for the ascent and descent.

💡 Pro move: Kotor is a very popular port in summer. Ships often arrive together — when several are in, the smaller ones dock and the rest tender. Get ashore early to beat the crowds in the narrow Old Town lanes.

Insider Tips

  • Arrive early, leave midday free: Kotor is one of the most visited ports in the Adriatic. The Old Town lanes get genuinely crowded by 10 AM in peak season. Get off first and you'll have it almost to yourself.
  • 💶
Cash or card: Euros are the currency; most Old Town shops, restaurants, and the Maritime Museum accept cards, but carry a small amount of cash for the fortress entry and smaller vendors.
  • 👟
Wear real shoes: The Old Town's marble cobblestones are slippery when wet, and the fortress climb is roughly 1,350 uneven stone steps. Sandals are manageable in the town; trainers or hiking shoes are better for the fortress.
  • 🌡️
Summer heat: Kotor sits in a sheltered bay and temperatures regularly exceed 35 °C in July–August. The fortress hike is brutal midday — go first thing or save it for late afternoon.
  • 🐱
Cats everywhere: Kotor has a centuries-old relationship with cats (they kept ships rat-free in the maritime era). The Cats Museum is a quirky Old Town stop, and dozens of well-fed cats roam the lanes — a genuine local character.
