Insider Tips

  • 💵
USD is king — but bring crisp bills. US dollars are accepted everywhere in Kampot, but merchants reject any note with a crease, tear, or ink mark. Change arrives in Cambodian Riel.
  • 🌶️
Buy Kampot pepper at the source. La Plantation and other farm shops sell certified Kampot pepper far cheaper than airport shops. It travels well and makes an exceptional souvenir.
  • 🦀
Don't skip Kep. The 30-minute ride to Kep's Crab Market is the most memorable meal of the day — stir-fried crab with fresh green pepper is a dish you won't find this good anywhere else.
  • 🌡️
Dress for heat and temple visits. Kampot is hot and humid year-round. Cover shoulders and knees for cave temples and Bokor. The mountain summit is noticeably cooler — bring a layer.
  • 📱
Download Grab or PassApp before you dock. These ride-hailing apps give fixed tuk-tuk prices with no haggling — a small convenience that pays off quickly in Kampot.
