Istanbul rewards independent exploration — the top sights cluster tightly in Sultanahmet and are all walkable from the tram stop.
The two defining monuments of Istanbul face each other across Sultanahmet Square. Hagia Sophia (a working mosque since 2020) now charges tourists €25, who visit the upper gallery only — the ground floor is reserved for worship; arrive at 9 AM to beat crowds. The Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Camii) remains free and is open to visitors between prayer times.
