One of Scotland's wildest islands, Rum is a National Nature Reserve where red deer roam the glens, white-tailed eagles soar overhead, and a crumbling Edwardian castle stands as a monument to Victorian excess. This is expedition cruising at its most raw.
Isle of Rum has no cruise pier — small expedition ships tender passengers to the CalMac ferry jetty at Kinloch on Loch Scresort.
💡 Pro move: The island has around 30 permanent residents. Be respectful near the village. No public rubbish bins on trails — pack out everything you bring.
Isle of Rum is a tender-only port accessible only to small expedition and cruise ships.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Expedition ships (Hurtigruten, Hebridean Princess, small charters) | Kinloch ferry jetty, Loch Scresort📍 | Tendered |
| Large cruise lines | Do not call here — port cannot accommodate vessels over ~150 passengers📍 | Tendered |
Rum is self-guided wilderness — there are no commercial tour operators on the island, so all excursions are on foot using NatureScot trails.
A short 30-minute return walk along the south shore of Loch Scresort to a purpose-built hide overlooking the water. Otters are regularly spotted here, along with seals, herons, and seabirds. One of the most reliable otter-watching spots in Scotland.
Explore Rum wildlife →The red sandstone Edwardian mansion built 1897–1900 for textile magnate Sir George Bullough is one of Scotland's most eccentric buildings. It once had heated alligator pools, a mechanical orchestrion, and Scotland's first private bowling alley. Now a Category A listed ruin managed by NatureScot — tours are limited and subject to availability; the exterior and grounds are always accessible.
Discover Kinloch Castle →A 1-hour circular walk from Kinloch into the NNR offering views across Loch Scresort and into the reserve's upland interior. Good chance of seeing red deer, golden eagles, and a variety of moorland birds. Well-marked and suitable for most fitness levels.
Walk Rum Nature Reserve →For fit hikers with sturdy boots, the peaks of Hallival (722m) and Askival (812m — Rum's highest point) form the classic walk onto the Rum Cuillin ridge from Kinloch. An 8–9-mile round trip with spectacular views to Skye's Black Cuillin. Only for experienced hillwalkers — allow 6–8 hours, and watch for nesting Manx shearwaters in the summit screes.
Plan a Rum Cuillin hike →An 8km track along the north coast to Kilmory beach — the best place on Rum to spot harbour porpoise, dolphins, and minke whales offshore. The beach itself is remote and beautiful, with views to Skye. Allow 4–5 hours return.
Explore Rum's north coast →All walking on Rum is self-guided on NatureScot trails — pick up a map at the pier visitor centre before heading out.
Follow the south shore of Loch Scresort from the pier to the NatureScot otter hide. Flat path, excellent for wildlife spotting at any time of day.
