Getting Ashore

Most cruise ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to Port Ellen pier; small expedition ships may occasionally dock.

Getting Ashore at Isle of Islay

  • 1
Tender to Port EllenThe vast majority of cruise ships anchor in Port Ellen Bay and use ship's tenders. The pier is right in the village — shops, cafés, and the Three Distilleries Path start are within minutes.
  • 2
Transport on the islandIslay is larger than it appears. Public buses run infrequently and taxis are scarce. Pre-book a private island tour or taxi if you want to go beyond walking distance — don't rely on finding one at the pier.
  • 3
Port Askaig (alternative)Some itineraries tender to Port Askaig on the north-east coast, close to Caol Ila Distillery. There's no village here — just the hotel, shop, and ferry terminal. Bunnahabhain distillery is 4 miles away.

💡 Pro move: Book distillery tours weeks or months ahead — walk-ins for guided tours are rarely available, though most distillery bars will serve drams without a reservation.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Insider Tips

  • 🚕
Pre-book transport or get stuck in Port Ellen. Islay has almost no taxis available on the day and buses are infrequent. If you want to see Bowmore, beaches, or the west coast, arrange a private tour or hire car before your cruise.
  • 🥃
Book distillery tours ahead of time. Tour slots at Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg, and Bowmore fill up fast — sometimes months out. Walk-in drams at the bar are usually fine, but don't count on a guided tour without a reservation.
  • 🧥
Pack proper waterproofs. Islay is fully exposed to the Atlantic — even in summer expect wind, rain, and cool temperatures. Layers and a quality waterproof jacket are essential, not optional.
  • 🦟
June–September: bring midge repellent. On calm, damp days Scottish midges can be intense. 'Smidge' brand repellent or Avon Skin So Soft are locals' go-to solutions — pick some up in Port Ellen if needed.
  • 🏦
Card payments work almost everywhere. British Pounds (GBP) are the currency. Most shops, distilleries, and cafés take contactless, but carry a little cash for roadside honesty boxes and small village stalls.
