Getting Ashore

All cruise ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to Galmisdale Pier on the island's southeast corner.

Getting Ashore at Isle of Eigg

  • 1
Tender to Galmisdale PierShips anchor in Galmisdale Bay. Tenders or Zodiacs ferry passengers to the small stone pier — plan for 10–15 minutes each way. Check sea conditions; swell can occasionally delay tendering.
  • 2
An Laimhrig community hubRight at the pier is An Laimhrig (The Landing Place): island shop, cafe & bar, toilets, showers, and bike hire. This is your base for the day.
  • 3
Plan your route before leaving the pierThere are no public buses or taxis. Distances are deceptively long on foot. Pick one main excursion — Sgùrr hike, the caves, or the northern beaches — and stick to it to make your tender return.
  • 4
Rent a bike if availableEigg Adventures hires mountain bikes and e-bikes from the pier. Book ahead if possible — they sell out fast when a ship is in. E-bikes open up the northern beaches for shorter calls.

💡 Pro move: Mobile signal is patchy. Download offline maps before leaving the ship and note your tender recall time carefully.

Hike An Sgùrr — Europe's Largest Pitchstone Ridge

The island's iconic 393m ridge is the largest exposed pitchstone lava flow in Europe. The 8km round-trip from the pier takes 3–4 hours with steep scrambling near the summit. Clear days give 360° views to Skye, Rum, Muck, Canna, and the Scottish mainland.

History

Massacre Cave & Cathedral Cave

On the south coast, these two caves hold centuries of island history. The Massacre Cave (Uamh Fhraing) is where nearly 400 MacDonalds were suffocated by the MacLeod clan in 1577 — a sombre, atmospheric site. Cathedral Cave nearby was secretly used for Catholic Mass during the Reformation. Bring a torch; paths are rocky.

⏱ 2.5 hrs return from pier🚶 Moderate, rough coastal path🕯️ Bring a torch

Singing Sands & Laig Bay

The Singing Sands (Camas Sgiotaig) in the island's northwest are named for the quartz grains that emit a musical squeak underfoot when dry. Adjacent Laig Bay offers sweeping white shell-sand beach with views of Rum's Cuillin mountains. Best reached by e-bike or bike.

Insider Tips

  • Watch your tender time. Eigg's paths are longer than they look. Set a phone alarm 90 minutes before your tender recall time and head back early.
  • 🚲
Book a bike before you arrive. Eigg Adventures (eiggadventures.co.uk) rents mountain bikes and e-bikes at the pier — they sell out the moment a ship docks. E-bikes let you reach the northern beaches within a normal call.
  • 🥾
Proper boots are essential. Every path beyond the pier is boggy, rough, or rocky. Trainers will be soaked within minutes. Waterproof walking boots are non-negotiable.
  • 🦟
Bring midge repellent (June–September). Scottish midges are ferocious on calm days. Avon Skin So Soft or DEET repellent is essential — the pier shop may stock it, but don't rely on that.
  • 💳
Cards accepted but carry cash. The shop and cafe take card payments, but the satellite reader can lose signal. A few British pounds ensures you can still buy lunch and gifts. There is no ATM on the island.
