Isla de los Estados, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina

One of Earth's most remote and untouched places, Isla de los Estados is the island that inspired Jules Verne's *The Lighthouse at the End of the World* — a protected nature reserve in the stormy sub-Antarctic waters off the eastern tip of Tierra del Fuego, visited by only a few hundred people each year.

Getting Ashore

There is no pier, dock, or infrastructure on Isla de los Estados. Access is exclusively by Zodiac inflatable boat from expedition vessels that carry special Argentine government permits.

Getting Ashore by Zodiac

  • 1
Zodiac boardingYour expedition ship anchors offshore. Crew will brief you on wet-landing procedure — you will board a Zodiac and step onto a rocky or pebble beach in shin-deep, frigid water. Knee-high waterproof boots (usually loaned by the ship) are essential.
  • 2
Biosecurity protocolBefore disembarking and on return, step through a foot bath to prevent introduction of invasive seeds or soil pathogens to this rodent-free reserve. Follow all guide instructions strictly.
  • 3
Guided shore timeAll landings are guided. There are no unescorted hikes — the terrain is uneven peat bog, slippery kelp-covered rocks, and dense Magellanic forest. Weather can shift from sun to snow and back in minutes.

💡 Pro move: Large mainstream cruise ships (Princess, Holland America, Celebrity, etc.) do NOT land here — they may pass through on scenic cruising itineraries. Only small expedition vessels (Lindblad-National Geographic, Ponant, Hapag-Lloyd, Seabourn, Silversea, Australis) with government permits conduct landings.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

There are no piers or docks on Isla de los Estados — all arrivals are by Zodiac from expedition vessels anchored offshore.

Insider Tips

  • 👢
Knee-high waterproof boots are mandatory. Expedition lines usually loan them — confirm before packing. Wet landings mean stepping into shin-deep, near-freezing seawater.
  • 🧥
Layer up and waterproof everything. Weather here can bring rain, snow, hail, and sunshine within the same hour. A windproof/waterproof outer layer, thermals, and waterproof gloves are non-negotiable.
  • 🌊
Start seasickness medication before the Strait of Le Maire. This is one of the world's most turbulent stretches of water — strong currents and converging swells churn over a shallow shelf. Don't wait until you feel unwell.
  • 📷
Protect your camera gear. Salt spray is constant. Bring a waterproof dry-bag for your camera and lens-cleaning cloths. Silica gel packets inside the bag help during landings.
  • 🍽️
There is absolutely nothing to buy ashore. No restaurants, cafes, shops, or vendors of any kind. All food and drinks must stay on the ship — bringing food ashore is prohibited to protect the ecosystem.
