One of Earth's most remote and untouched places, Isla de los Estados is the island that inspired Jules Verne's *The Lighthouse at the End of the World* — a protected nature reserve in the stormy sub-Antarctic waters off the eastern tip of Tierra del Fuego, visited by only a few hundred people each year.
There is no pier, dock, or infrastructure on Isla de los Estados. Access is exclusively by Zodiac inflatable boat from expedition vessels that carry special Argentine government permits.
💡 Pro move: Large mainstream cruise ships (Princess, Holland America, Celebrity, etc.) do NOT land here — they may pass through on scenic cruising itineraries. Only small expedition vessels (Lindblad-National Geographic, Ponant, Hapag-Lloyd, Seabourn, Silversea, Australis) with government permits conduct landings.
There are no piers or docks on Isla de los Estados — all arrivals are by Zodiac from expedition vessels anchored offshore.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Expedition ships (Lindblad, Ponant, Hapag-Lloyd, Seabourn, Silversea) | Offshore anchorage — various bays (San Juan de Salvamento, Puerto Cook, Puerto Parry)📍 | Tendered |
| Large cruise ships (scenic cruising only) | Strait of Le Maire / island fjords — no landing📍 | Tendered |
All activities are guided shore expeditions included in your cruise fare — there are no independent tours, taxis, or outside operators on this uninhabited reserve.
The original 1884 lighthouse — rebuilt in 1998 — that inspired Jules Verne's novel *The Lighthouse at the End of the World*. A short Zodiac ride and wet landing brings you to this iconic promontory overlooking the open South Atlantic.

Find wildlife expedition tours →A haunting 19th-century military prison site in a dramatic bay, with ruins of the colony and a small weathered cemetery where prisoners and sailors were buried. One of the Southern Hemisphere's most evocative historic sites.
Find Patagonia expedition cruises →The glacially carved fjords of Hoppner and Basil Hall rise in sheer cliffs draped in mist and wind-sculpted green vegetation. Many tours remain Zodiac-based for scenic cruising through the fjords without landing.
Find fjord expedition tours →The relentless sub-Antarctic winds stunt the southern beech trees into twisted, ground-hugging shapes encrusted with thick moss and lichen. Short guided hikes through this otherworldly forest feel like walking onto a film set.
Find Tierra del Fuego expedition tours →There are no paved paths or trails on Isla de los Estados — all walking is guided, over peat bogs, rocky beaches, and coastal terrain.
From your Zodiac landing on the pebble beach, follow your expedition guide up to the rebuilt 1884 lighthouse on its rocky promontory. Views out to the Strait of Le Maire are staggering on clear days.
