Getting Ashore

Most ships tender or dock at Ischia Porto, a natural harbor formed inside a sunken volcanic crater on the island's northeast coast.

Getting Ashore at Ischia

  • 1
Small ships — dock at Ischia PortoSmaller luxury vessels (Windstar, Seabourn, Ponant, SeaDream) can berth directly at the Banchina Olimpica pier inside the harbor. You walk straight off.
  • 2
Large ships — anchor and tenderLarger cruise ships anchor offshore and run tenders into Ischia Porto. Tender ride is 10-15 minutes. Allow extra time during peak hours — queues can form in both directions.
  • 3
Rare alternative: Ischia Ponte tenderA few ships anchor near the Aragonese Castle at Ischia Ponte. Confirm with your ship if this applies — it puts you closer to the castle but further from buses and taxis.

💡 Pro move: Ischia Porto's ferry terminal handles constant traffic to/from Naples and Pozzuoli. It's busy but well-organized. Local buses, microtaxis (Ape Calessino), and regular taxis are waiting just outside.

Insider Tips

  • Watch the clock. Ischia's ring road is single-lane and notoriously congested in summer. If you venture to Sant'Angelo, Forio, or La Mortella, leave at least 60-90 minutes to return to the tender dock.
  • 🛺
Negotiate microtaxi fares before boarding. The Ape Calessino three-wheelers are fun and breezy, but always agree on a price upfront — they're not metered.
  • 🚌
EAV buses are cheap but crowded. A single ticket costs €1.50. The CD goes clockwise, CS goes counter-clockwise around the island. Buses are packed and hot in summer — start early.
  • 🏊
Thermal parks need a long port day. Poseidon and Negombo are worth it, but only if you have 8+ hours ashore. The trip takes 25 minutes each way, and you'll want 3-4 hours to soak properly.
  • 🍽️
Siesta is real here. Many shops and restaurants in Ischia Ponte and smaller villages close 1:30-4:30 PM. Plan lunch early or stick to the harbor area for afternoon eating.
