Getting Ashore

Ísafjörður is one of cruising's rare treats: the main pier sits right in the middle of town, so you step ashore into the old wooden quarter within minutes. No shuttle, no transfer — just walk.

Step off the ship, step into the Westfjords

  • 1
Main pier (town centre)Most cruise ships berth at the central pier on the spit of land that divides the inner harbour. The old town and its cafés are a two-minute walk. Tourist information and tour operators set up near the gangway on busy ship days.
  • 2
Very large ships — possible tenderA small number of very large vessels cannot berth and will anchor in the fjord, using tenders to the harbour quay. The tender dock is equally central. Check your ship's daily programme the evening before.
  • 3
Getting around beyond townÍsafjörður is tiny and very walkable, but the best sights — Dynjandi, Bolungarvík, Súðavík — require a guided tour, rental car, or taxi. Book shore excursions in advance; day-of tours fill quickly on multi-ship days.

💡 Pro move: The town sits on a narrow peninsula — virtually everything is within a 10-minute walk of the pier.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Ísafjörður's main pier places you in the heart of the old town the moment you step ashore — one of the most convenient ship-to-street arrivals in Iceland.

Top Excursions

The Westfjords rewards explorers: a thundering staircase waterfall, Iceland's only fox, puffin-filled islands, and a mountain viewpoint hike are all within striking distance of the pier.

Iconic

Dynjandi Waterfall

Often called the jewel of the Westfjords, Dynjandi fans out like a bridal veil over 100 metres before tumbling through six smaller falls to the shore. The drive along the fjord road is itself spectacular. A short, steep trail leads to the base of the main fall.

Vigur Island Puffin Tour

A short boat ride from Ísafjörður lands you on tiny Vigur island, home to thousands of Atlantic puffins, eider ducks, and Arctic terns nesting within arm's reach. An inhabited farm since the 17th century, Vigur also has Iceland's only windmill and oldest rowing boat.

Súðavík Arctic Fox Centre

The Melrakkasetur (Arctic Fox Centre) in nearby Súðavík is dedicated to Iceland's only native land mammal. Watch rescued foxes in outdoor enclosures, learn about their ecology and winter survival, and browse the research exhibits. An easy 30-minute drive from Ísafjörður.

History

Westfjords Heritage Museum (Byggðasafn Vestfjarða)

Housed in four restored 18th-century timber warehouses — among the oldest buildings in Iceland — the Heritage Museum brings Westfjords fishing and trading life vividly to life. The Ósvör Maritime Museum annexe on the outskirts recreates a 19th-century fishing station.

Self-Guided Walks & Hikes

Ísafjörður is a walker's delight: the compact old town can be covered in under an hour, while two nearby hikes reward with panoramic fjord views.

Old Town Wooden Quarter

~1.5 km · 45 min · easy

Wander the grid of preserved 18th- and 19th-century timber houses clustered on the harbour spit. Pass the Heritage Museum warehouses, the white-painted church, and colourful fishing sheds before looping back along the water to the pier.

Naustahvilft (The Troll Seat) Hike

~4 km return · 2–2.5 hrs · moderate

A well-marked trail climbs steeply from the edge of town to a natural rock amphitheatre carved into the mountainside, with sweeping views over the fjord and the ship far below. The 'Troll Seat' hollow is a dramatic resting spot halfway up.

Bolungarvík Coastal Drive & Walk

~30 min drive + 1 hr walk · easy

The neighbouring town of Bolungarvík, 15 km along the fjord, has its own open-air maritime museum (Ósvör) and a short seaside walk beneath dramatic cliffs. Best combined with a rental car or taxi for a half-day outing.

Insider Tips

  • 🧥
Dress for mountain weather. The Westfjords can deliver wind, rain, and cold even in summer. Waterproof jacket and layers are essential — even on sunny mornings.
  • 💳
Cards work almost everywhere. Króna cash is accepted but rarely necessary; contactless payment is standard in cafés, museums, and tour offices.
  • 🍽️
Lunch at Tjöruhúsið. This legendary fish restaurant serves whatever was caught that morning, cooked in a skillet, eaten communally. It is small and popular — arrive early or book ahead on ship days.
  • Book excursions before arrival. Dynjandi and Vigur tours fill up fast when two or more ships are in port. Secure spots online a week ahead.
  • 🦊
Allow time for Súðavík. The Arctic Fox Centre is only 30 minutes away but most visitors underestimate how long they linger — budget at least 90 minutes for the drive and exhibits.
