Getting Ashore

Hiddensee is a niche stop — mainly riverboats and small coastal cruise vessels dock directly at Kloster or Vitte piers; guests from larger ships typically arrive by ferry excursion from Schaprode (Rügen) or Stralsund.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Small ships: pier arrivalRiverboats and boutique coastal vessels dock directly at the quay in Kloster (north) or Vitte (central). Both are within a short walk of village shops, bike rental, and beaches.
  • 2
Larger ship guests: ferry from Rügen/StralsundFrom Schaprode on western Rügen, scheduled ferries run by FRS Reederei Hiddensee take about 45 minutes to reach Vitte — this is the main year-round crossing. Seasonal ferries from Stralsund are slower (roughly 1.5–2 hrs). Buy tickets at the terminal; crossings are frequent in summer.
  • 3
On the islandNo private cars are allowed. Rent a bicycle at the harbor (€8–12/day) — the best way to cover the island. Horse-drawn carriages and an electric bus also connect the three villages.

💡 Pro move: Bring cash — many small vendors, bike hire shops, and fish stalls are card-free.

Hiddensee rewards slow exploration — rent a bike, climb the lighthouse, and spend time on the Baltic beaches rather than rushing an organised tour.

Insider Tips

  • 💶
Bring cash. Many island vendors — bike hire, fish stalls, carriage rides — don't accept cards. ATMs are limited and often busy in peak season.
  • 🚲
Rent a bike immediately. Hire shops at Kloster and Vitte harbour fill up fast on busy days. E-bikes are available if you want an easier ride against the Baltic headwind.
  • 🌬️
Dress for wind. The Baltic is breezy year-round. Even in summer, a windproof layer is essential — especially on the Dornbusch cliffs.
  • 🍊
Try Sanddorn (sea buckthorn). This tangy orange berry grows wild on the dunes and is turned into cakes, ice cream, liqueur, and grog at every café and stall. It's the island's signature flavour.
  • Plan your return leg. If cycling, the headwind going back to the pier can be brutal. Allow 20–30 extra minutes, or catch the electric bus back from Vitte or Neuendorf.
