Getting Ashore

There is no dock on Herschel Island — your ship's expedition team ferries all passengers ashore via Zodiac to a gravel beach at Pauline Cove.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Prepare for a wet landingYou will step out of the Zodiac into shallow, icy water (usually calf-deep) and walk onto a gravel spit. Knee-high waterproof boots — typically provided by your cruise line — are mandatory.
  • 2
Bear guards and safety perimeterYukon Park Rangers and your ship's armed bear guards establish a safety zone before passengers land. Stay within the perimeter at all times — both polar bears and grizzlies frequent the island.
  • 3
No food ashoreBringing food or snacks onto the island is strictly prohibited to avoid attracting bears. Use ship restrooms before boarding Zodiacs — the only facility ashore is a rustic composting outhouse near the ranger station.

💡 Pro move: Season runs mid-June to mid-September. Visits depend on ice conditions and may be cancelled at short notice. All access requires advance permits arranged by your cruise line.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

All ships anchor offshore and transfer passengers to Pauline Cove by Zodiac — there are no piers or docks of any kind.

Insider Tips

  • 🥾
Waterproof boots are non-negotiable. Most expedition lines provide knee-high Muck Boots or Xtratufs — confirm before packing. No boots = no landing.
  • 🦟
Bring a mosquito head net. July and early August bring fierce Arctic mosquitoes. DEET repellent plus a head net makes the difference between enjoying the visit and misery.
  • 🧥
Layer aggressively. Even in summer, wind off the pack ice can drop the feel to near-freezing. A thermal base layer, fleece, and windproof outer shell are the minimum.
  • 📷
Leave absolutely nothing, take nothing. Removing any item — rocks, bones, wildflowers, driftwood, historic nails — is illegal. This is an archaeologically sensitive park.
  • 💵
Rarely any need for cash. There is no gift shop or food vendor. Occasionally rangers sell conservation patches (CAD cash only). Your dining and shopping happen aboard ship.
