Ships dock at the Terminal Sierra Maestra on the Havana waterfront, steps from the edge of Old Havana.

Getting from the Ship to the City

  • 1
Walk straight into Old HavanaThe terminal exit drops you onto the Havana waterfront (Avenida del Puerto). Plaza de San Francisco de Asís and the heart of Habana Vieja are a 5-10 minute walk along the waterfront. This is one of the most walkable ports in the Caribbean — no taxi needed to start exploring.
  • 2
Taxis for further-out sightsFor Vedado, Miramar, or the Necrópolis Cristóbal Colón, take a classic car taxi or a state-licensed cab (yellow or orange coco-taxis). Agree on the fare in advance — meters are not standard. Expect $5-15 USD for most city trips.
  • 3
Customs and currencyAll visitors must clear Cuban immigration and customs on arrival. Bring cash — US debit and credit cards generally do not work in Cuba. Euros and Canadian dollars can be exchanged at CADECA exchange houses (look for them near the terminal and in Old Havana). Exchange what you need for the day.

💡 Pro move: US-flagged cruise ships have faced significant restrictions on Cuba calls since 2019 — confirm your sailing's current Cuba status with your cruise line before planning this excursion.

History

Old Havana Walking Tour

UNESCO-listed Habana Vieja is the core of any Havana visit. A guided tour covers the four main colonial plazas — Plaza de Armas, Plaza de la Catedral, Plaza Vieja, and Plaza de San Francisco — plus the restored baroque churches, the old city walls, and the stories behind the colonial-era buildings.

Iconic

Classic Car City Tour

Havana's fleet of perfectly maintained 1950s American cars is genuinely remarkable — and renting one for a private city tour is the quintessential Cuba experience. An open-top Chevy or Buick takes you along the Malecón, past the Capitol building, through Vedado, and out to the hilltop Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña.

⏱ 2-3 hrs🚗 Private classic car📷 Very photogenic💰 ~$30-60 USD for the car

Live Music & Rum Experience

Cuba is the birthplace of son cubano, salsa, and mambo. An afternoon at one of the historic music venues — Casa de la Música, a Buena Vista Social Club tribute show (often at Legendarios del Guajirito), or any of the dozens of live-music bars in Habana Vieja — pairs naturally with a rum tasting. The drinks are cheap; the music is extraordinary.

⏱ 2-4 hrs🎵 Live music🍹 Rum included on most tours🌆 Best: afternoon into evening

Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña

One of the largest fortresses in the Americas, built by the Spanish in the 18th century to defend Havana Harbor after the British briefly seized the city. The fort sits on the far side of the harbor and offers sweeping views back across the Havana skyline. Every evening at 9 PM, the ceremonial cannon firing (El Cañonazo) is reenacted in period costume.

Cuban Food & Market Tour

Beyond mojitos and ropa vieja, Havana has a developing private-restaurant (paladar) scene worth exploring. A guided food tour hits state-run agromercados (farmers markets), neighborhood paladares, and street snacks like pan con lechón (roast pork sandwiches) and croquetas.

Hemingway Tour — Finca Vigía & El Floridita

Ernest Hemingway lived in Cuba for 22 years and left his mark on the city. Finca Vigía, his estate in the suburb of San Francisco de Paula, is preserved as he left it and is open to visitors. Back in Old Havana, El Floridita bar is where the daiquiri was (allegedly) perfected — and where Hemingway drank them by the dozen.

⏱ 3-4 hrs🚕 Transport included on tours📚 Literary history🍹 Daiquiri tasting optional

Self-Guided Walks & Hikes

Old Havana is one of the finest walking cities in the Caribbean — compact, dense with history, and almost entirely flat.

The Four Plazas of Habana Vieja

2 km · 60-90 min · Easy

From the waterfront, walk to Plaza de San Francisco de Asís (the old trading square), then north along Calle Oficios to Plaza de Armas (the oldest square, lined with booksellers), west to Plaza de la Catedral (Havana's baroque showpiece), and south through Calle Obispo — Old Havana's main pedestrian street — back to Plaza Vieja. Each plaza has its own character and a bar or café for a rest stop.

The Malecón Stroll

2 km one-way · 30-40 min · Easy

Walk west from the edge of Old Havana along the Malecón, Havana's famous 8-km seawall boulevard. Waves crash against the wall, crumbling pastel mansions line the inland side, and locals gather here at all hours. Walk as far as the Hotel Nacional de Cuba in Vedado — a National Monument and one of the great hotels of the Americas — before catching a classic-car taxi back.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Bring cash — US cards don't work in Cuba. US-issued credit and debit cards are blocked by the US embargo. Bring euros, Canadian dollars, or US dollars in cash and exchange at a CADECA (the official exchange bureau). Avoid street changers.
  • 📱
Internet is limited and requires a local SIM or Wi-Fi card — buy an ETECSA card for Wi-Fi hotspots in parks and hotels. Don't count on Google Maps working freely; download an offline map of Havana before your cruise.
  • 🚗
Classic car taxis are priced for tourists — negotiate first. The convertible 1950s cars are a genuine delight, but agree on the fare before you sit down. Most city trips should run $5-15 USD. Coco-taxis (yellow bubble taxis) are cheaper for short hops.
  • ☀️
Old Havana is exposed and hot — the colonial streets have limited shade. Start your walk early (before 10 AM), carry water, and plan a long lunch in a shaded paladar during the worst of the midday heat.
  • 🎵
Say yes to live music — Havana is one of the great music cities in the world. Street bands and bar performers are everywhere in Old Havana. A small tip (1-2 CUP or a dollar) is customary and very welcome.
