Sri Lanka's deep-water southern gateway — not much at the dock, but everything inland: leopards in Yala, elephant herds in Udawalawe, flamingos in Bundala, and ancient stupas rising from the jungle.
Hambantota International Port (Magampura) is a modern deep-water container and cruise facility — ships dock cleanly, but the port itself is industrial and there's nothing walkable nearby. Everything worth seeing is inland and requires a vehicle.
💡 Pro move: No ATMs or shops inside the port area — carry LKR (or USD as backup) before arrival. There is nothing of tourist interest within walking distance of the terminal.
All cruise ships dock at the Hambantota International Port (Magampura) — a deep-water facility built for large vessels, with a dedicated cruise terminal.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |

Hambantota is a launching pad for Sri Lanka's finest wildlife and ancient sites. The port itself offers nothing — every highlight is 45–90 minutes away by road.
Sri Lanka's most famous park and one of the world's highest densities of leopards. Also elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species. A full morning game drive is the signature Hambantota excursion.
Find Yala safari tours →The best place in Sri Lanka to see large herds of wild elephants — hundreds live in the park year-round. Less crowded than Yala, with near-guaranteed elephant sightings and open grassland scenery.
Find Udawalawe elephant tours →A Ramsar wetland reserve on the coast east of Hambantota, famous for migratory flamingos, painted storks, and other water birds. Closer to the port than Yala and easier to combine with Tissamaharama.
Find Bundala birdwatching tours →The ancient royal capital of southern Sri Lanka, with a great white dagoba (stupa), sacred elephant rides, and the vast Tissa Wewa reservoir. Pairs well with Bundala or as a pre-safari town stop.
Find Tissamaharama tours →One of Sri Lanka's holiest pilgrimage sites, revered by Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims alike. The Kataragama Devalaya and the ritual atmosphere make for a striking cultural contrast to the safari parks.
Find Kataragama tours →A dramatic cave temple complex carved into a 200-metre granite outcrop, with Buddhist murals, reclining Buddhas, and panoramic views over the southern plains. Less visited than Dambulla but equally impressive.
Find Mulkirigala temple tours →There is nothing walkable at or near the port — Hambantota town offers only basic services and the port area is industrial. All sightseeing requires transport.
If you have time between safaris, Hambantota town is a quiet fishing community. The Hummanaya blowhole — one of the largest in Asia — is just west of town and worth a quick stop when conditions are right (best May–October).
