Insider Tips

  • 🔒
VPN before you arrive. China blocks Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and most Western apps. Buy an eSIM with a built-in VPN (Airalo or Nomad) before boarding — you cannot easily download VPN apps once in China.
  • 📱
Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay. Cash is increasingly rare in Haikou — most vendors, taxis, and restaurants use QR-code payments. Link an international credit card before arrival to avoid scrambling for cash.
  • 🌡️
Dress for tropical heat. Haikou is warm and humid year-round. Light, breathable clothing and sun protection are essential — temperatures often exceed 30°C (86°F). The Hainan Provincial Museum and cdf mall are air-conditioned relief.
  • 🍜
Eat Wenchang Chicken and Hainanese coffee. Hainan is the origin of Hainanese chicken rice — the Haikou version is richer than Singapore's. Wash it down with local kopitiam-style coffee (强烈推荐 — strongly recommended) on Qilou Old Street.
  • 🛍️
Duty-free ID rule. Hainan's offshore duty-free shops require your passport and cruise/boarding card. Limits apply per person — check current allowances for alcohol, cosmetics, and electronics before you buy.
