Haida Gwaii Islands, British Columbia, Canada

The Galápagos of the North — a remote, rainforest-draped archipelago where ancient Haida totem poles decay back into the moss and humpback whales breach offshore. This is wilderness and living culture, not a port town.

Getting Ashore

All cruise ships tender or use Zodiacs — there is no deep-water cruise pier anywhere in Haida Gwaii.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Tender to Daajing Giids WharfMost expedition ships anchor in the bay off Daajing Giids (formerly Queen Charlotte City) and run tender shuttles to the public wharf. The ride takes 10-15 minutes.
  • 2
Walk into TownFrom the wharf it is a flat, easy 5-10 minute walk (~500 m) to Oceanview Drive — the main street with cafés, Haida artisan shops, and the visitor centre.
  • 3
Expedition Zodiac LandingsTrue expedition ships access Gwaii Haanas and remote village sites by Zodiac, landing on rocky beaches and gravel shores. Wear waterproof footwear.
  • 4
Book Everything in AdvanceThere are no walk-off tours, no Uber, no rental car kiosks. All guided excursions must be pre-arranged through your cruise line or a licensed local operator.

💡 Pro move: Daajing Giids and Skidegate are ~9 km apart — you need a shuttle or taxi to travel between them, not walkable along the highway.

Insider Tips

  • 📅
Book everything before you sail. There are no walk-off tours, no taxis on demand, and no rental cars at the dock. All excursions must be arranged in advance through your cruise line or a licensed Haida Gwaii operator.
  • 🌧️
Dress for wet and cold. Even in July, expect cool temperatures, rain, and wind. Gore-Tex jacket, waterproof boots, and layers are essential — this is a temperate rainforest.
  • 🙏
Respect Haida culture. Do not touch totem poles (sacred and fragile). Always ask before photographing Haida people or carvers. Never take stones, shells, or wood from ancient village sites.
  • 📵
Cell service is minimal. Signal exists in Daajing Giids, Skidegate, and Masset town centres. Once you enter Gwaii Haanas or any forest trail, expect zero connectivity.
  • 💰
Bring Canadian dollars. Credit cards work in shops and restaurants, but local Haida artisans selling at markets often prefer cash. ATM is available in Daajing Giids.
