Getting Ashore

Hachijojima has two ports — Kaminato (Sokodo) on the northeast and Yaene on the southwest — and the captain chooses based on wind direction the morning of arrival. Missed calls due to rough seas are common.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Which port today?Check ship announcements at dawn. Kaminato (Sokodo) Port is more common and places you near Sokodo Beach; Yaene Port is remote with nothing walkable nearby.
  • 2
Tender or pierMost cruise ships tender in. If your ship docks at Kaminato, there is a wharf but no boarding bridge — watch your step. Tender queues can be slow; go early or wait out the rush.
  • 3
From the pierSokodo Beach is a 2-minute walk from Kaminato. The main Mitsune town area is 20-30 minutes on foot (uphill) or a short taxi/bus ride. Cruise lines often run shuttle buses — confirm on board.
  • 4
Getting aroundE-bikes are the best independent option (rent near Sokodo Port). Taxis are scarce — ask the pier tourist desk to call one. Buses run but infrequently; the Bu-Supa day pass (~1,000 JPY) covers buses and several municipal onsen.

💡 Pro move: Port call cancellation rate is high — Hachijojima is exposed to Pacific swells. Have a backup plan and don't pre-book non-refundable activities.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Hachijojima has two usable ports; the captain picks based on sea state — Kaminato (northeast) is the usual choice.

Top Excursions

With limited independent transport, ship excursions are worthwhile here — but a rented E-bike and the Bu-Supa pass let you cover the highlights on your own.

Insider Tips

  • 💴
Cash only. Very few shops or restaurants on Hachijojima accept credit cards. Stock up on yen before boarding; the island's only international ATM is at the post office with limited hours.
  • Expect a tender — and possible cancellation. Pacific swells regularly prevent landing. Don't book expensive non-refundable independent activities; verify the port call is confirmed before you leave the ship.
  • 🚲
Rent an E-bike. The island is hilly — a standard bicycle is brutal. E-bike rentals near Sokodo Port are affordable and let you reach the onsen, lava coast, and mountain trailheads independently.
  • 🍣
Try Shimazushi. The island's signature sushi uses karashi (yellow mustard) instead of wasabi — it's a genuine regional specialty you won't find on the mainland. Any local restaurant will have it.
  • 🚌
Bu-Supa pass = great value. The bus + hot spring day pass (~1,000 JPY) covers unlimited bus rides and free entry to several municipal onsen including Miharashi-no-yu.
