The most untouched of the Bay Islands, Guanaja trades highways for water-taxi lanes and resort crowds for pristine Mesoamerican reef. Christopher Columbus landed here in 1502 — it's still that remote.
All ships anchor and tender passengers to Bonacca (the Cay) or to private resort docks — there is no cruise pier on Guanaja.
💡 Pro move: The main island is plagued by sandflies (no-see-ums) that repel standard bug spray. Bring baby oil, coconut oil, or Avon Skin So Soft — locals swear by them.
Guanaja has no dedicated cruise pier; all vessels anchor offshore and use tenders.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Windstar, Ponant, Sea Cloud, expedition ships | Anchor off Bonacca; tender to Bonacca main dock or resort docks📍 | Tendered |
| All other cruise lines | Anchor near Savannah Bight area; tender to Bonacca dock📍 | Tendered |
Guanaja's excursion highlight is its pristine reef — one of the healthiest sections of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — plus a car-free cay and a pine-forest waterfall hike.
A volcanic underwater crevice near the island's western end with dramatically healthy coral and abundant fish. Far less diver pressure than Roatan keeps the reef in exceptional shape.

Find Guanaja kayak tours →Bonacca (The Cay) is entirely walkable and rewards aimless exploration — getting to main-island beaches or hikes requires a water taxi.
Wander the narrow alleys and bridges of Bonacca, the densely packed stilt-house island that holds most of Guanaja's population. No cars or wheeled vehicles — only foot traffic on narrow concrete walkways. Colorful wooden homes over the water, small canals below, and an authentic Caribbean-Creole community to explore.
