Getting Ashore

There is no pier. Your ship anchors in the Coral Sea alongside an outer reef, and tenders carry you to a permanently moored floating activity pontoon.

Getting to the Reef

  • 1
Ship's tender to the pontoonMost ships operate directly to a reef pontoon — either Hardy Reef (Whitsundays area), Agincourt Reef (Port Douglas region), or Arlington Reef (Cairns area). Tender ride is 5–15 minutes from the ship.
  • 2
Pontoon orientationPontoons are large multi-level floating platforms with gear rental, snorkel entry stairs, an underwater observatory, a semi-submersible, a buffet lunch area, and sun decks. Everything you need is here.
  • 3
Activities briefingStaff run regular briefings for snorkellers and introductory divers. Gear (mask, fins, stinger suit) is included or available for a small rental fee. Certified dive gear is available for hire.
  • 4
Return tender to shipTenders run continuously throughout the call. Allow 20 minutes before all-aboard — the open-ocean swell can slow boarding.

💡 Pro move: Seasickness caution: the open Coral Sea can be choppy. Take motion sickness medication before leaving the ship. The pontoon itself is stable once you're on it.

Insider Tips

  • 🧴
Use reef-safe sunscreen only. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority prohibits oxybenzone and octinoxate sunscreens. Bring mineral SPF 50+ or buy on the pontoon.
  • 🪼
Always wear a stinger suit from November to May — box jellyfish and Irukandji are present in these waters. Suits are provided free on pontoons but supply is limited; board early.
  • 💊
Take seasickness meds before tendering. The open Coral Sea can run 1–2 metre swells. Once on the pontoon you'll be fine, but the tender and semi-sub can be rough.
  • 📸
Underwater cameras are worth it. The outer reef visibility is 20–30 metres. Bring a waterproof case or rent a GoPro on the pontoon — smartphone photos here are extraordinary.
  • 💳
Credit cards accepted on the pontoon for drinks, merchandise, dive add-ons, and helicopter flights. Australian dollars are the currency; tipping is not customary.
