Getting Ashore

Gough Island has no port infrastructure and landings by tourists are prohibited — your experience is entirely from the ship or Zodiac.

Arriving at Gough Island

  • 1
Ship & Zodiac cruisingExpedition ships anchor offshore and launch Zodiacs for close coastal cruising along the cliffs. You stay in the Zodiacs — no stepping ashore.
  • 2
Weather is everythingThe South Atlantic's Roaring Forties can produce swells that cancel Zodiac ops entirely. Even on fair days, launches depend on the captain's assessment. Prepare mentally for ship-deck-only viewing.
  • 3
Biosecurity briefingIf Zodiacs launch, strict biosecurity protocols apply: clothing and gear must be free of seeds, soil, and organic matter to protect the island's fragile ecosystem.

💡 Pro move: Only expedition vessels (Oceanwide Expeditions, Ponant, Silversea and similar) call here — typically as part of an 'Atlantic Odyssey' routing between Antarctica and the UK/Europe.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

There is no pier or harbor at Gough Island — all access is by Zodiac from anchored expedition ships, weather permitting.

Top Excursions

All 'excursions' are wildlife encounters viewed from Zodiacs or the ship's decks — there are no tour operators, guides, or bookable shore trips.

Wildlife

Zodiac Wildlife Cruise Along the Cliffs

Weave between sea stacks and beneath 300 m volcanic cliffs while thousands of Tristan albatrosses, sooty shearwaters, and Atlantic petrels wheel overhead. Northern rockhopper penguins line the boulder beaches; subantarctic fur seals lounge in kelp-fringed coves.

Seabird Observation from the Ship

Even without Zodiac ops, the ship deck delivers world-class seabirding. Wandering and Tristan albatrosses follow in the ship's wake; Wilson's storm-petrels dance in the bow spray. Your naturalist guide narrates from the bridge wings.

Scenic Coastal Photography

The island's coastline is a succession of dramatic arches, sea caves, and cascading waterfalls dropping directly into the Atlantic. Green-velvet tussock grass cloaks every surface. Misty light and moody skies make for extraordinary landscape photography.

Insider Tips

  • 📷
Bring a telephoto lens. A 300–600mm lens with image stabilisation is essential — you'll be shooting from a moving Zodiac or ship deck at subjects on distant cliffs.
  • 🧊
Dress for the Roaring Forties. Even in austral summer (Dec–Feb), expect cold, wet, and relentlessly windy conditions. Waterproof shell, thermal layers, gloves, and a beanie are non-negotiable.
  • 🌊
Expect the unexpected. Swells can cancel Zodiac operations with no warning. Roughly half of all visits are ship-deck-only due to sea state. That's still exceptional wildlife viewing — just from higher up.
  • 🌍
No money needed. There is literally nothing to buy. No souvenirs, no snacks, no excursion fees payable ashore. Everything is included in your expedition cruise fare.
  • 🦅
Endemic species watch. Keep eyes on rocky ledges for the tiny Gough Moorhen and Gough Bunting — both found nowhere else on Earth. Your expedition naturalist will call them out.
