Genoa, Liguria, Italy

Italy's great port city wears its seafaring past openly — a labyrinth of UNESCO-listed caruggi (medieval lanes), magnificent Renaissance palaces, and a waterfront reinvented around one of Europe's finest aquariums. Add the birthplace of Christopher Columbus and the invention of pesto, and a day here earns its keep.

Getting Ashore

Genoa's Stazione Marittima cruise terminal is walkable to almost everything worth seeing.

Getting Ashore in Genoa

  • 1
Disembark at Stazione MarittimaThe cruise terminal sits right on the Porto Antico waterfront. Walk out and you're already in the thick of it — the Aquarium is 300 m away, the historic caruggi lanes a 5-minute walk inland.
  • 2
On foot is bestThe UNESCO old town is compact and largely pedestrian. Wear comfortable shoes — the lanes are cobbled and can be steep.
  • 3
Taxis & local transitTaxis queue at the terminal exit. City buses cover the wider city, and the Ascensore Castelletto (a public lift) runs from Piazza del Portello up to the hilltop Castelletto viewpoint.
  • 4
Ship's shuttlesMost lines do not run a shuttle — the central location makes it unnecessary. Confirm with your ship before relying on one.

💡 Pro move: Genoa is a homeport for many Mediterranean itineraries, so the terminal can be busy on turnaround days. Allow extra time if departing from here.

Insider Tips

  • 🎟️
Book the Aquarium online. Queues at the Acquario di Genova can be long on busy ship days — pre-book tickets to walk straight in.
  • 🍃
Eat pesto where it's made. Trofie al pesto is the local staple. Small trattorias in the caruggi serve it fresh and cheap — skip the tourist restaurants facing the port.
  • 👟
Cobblestones everywhere. The historic lanes are uneven and can be steep. Comfortable walking shoes are essential — ditch the sandals.
  • 🚆
Cinque Terre is doable but tight. Only attempt it if your ship is in port for at least 10 hours — the train ride is 90+ min each way. Missing the ship is not worth it.
  • 💶
Cash handy in the caruggi. Most small food stalls and bakeries in the medieval lanes are cash-only. ATMs are common around Piazza de Ferrari.
