Insider Tips

  • 🌡️
Gulf humidity is real. Summer calls (June–September) can see heat indices above 100°F. Start early, hydrate, and don't underestimate the sun on the beach or seawall.
  • 🦟
Bug spray in warmer months. Mosquitoes and no-see-ums can be aggressive near the waterfront in the evening.
  • 🦐
Eat the Gulf shrimp. Galveston's local seafood — especially shrimp and oysters — is the real deal. Lunch spots fill up fast; eat by noon.
  • 🚗
Rideshares are easy and cheap. Uber and Lyft operate reliably across the island. Space Center Houston is the one excursion that really needs a car or tour.
  • 🏖️
Beach water is murky. The Gulf near Galveston is naturally brownish from river sediment — not pollution. Still swimmable; just don't expect Caribbean clarity.
