Getting Ashore

There are no gangways here — you board a zodiac panga for every landing, either stepping onto dry rock (dry landing) or wading ashore through calf-deep water (wet landing).

Getting Ashore in the Galapagos

  • 1
Board the pangaYour ship anchors in the bay and zodiac pangas (small inflatable motorized boats) ferry guests ashore in small groups with your certified National Park naturalist guide.
  • 2
Dry vs. wet landingsDry landings — you step from the panga onto a dock, jetty, or flat rock. Wet landings — the panga backs onto a sandy beach; slide over the side into knee-to-calf-deep water and wade in. Wear waterproof sandals for wet landings.
  • 3
Stay with your guideAll visitor sites require a certified Galapagos National Park naturalist guide. You cannot roam freely at park sites — your guide leads the group along marked trails. Town areas on inhabited islands are free to explore independently.
  • 4
Entry fees and permitsA Transit Control Card ($20 USD, bought at mainland Ecuador airport) and Galapagos National Park fee ($200 USD adults, $100 children under 12) are required. Many expedition cruises pre-arrange these — confirm with your operator before departure.

💡 Pro move: Bring clean, unripped USD bills — merchants throughout Ecuador frequently refuse worn or damaged currency.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Bring clean USD cash. Ecuador uses the US dollar. ATMs exist in Santa Cruz and San Cristobal, but bring cash from the mainland — machines frequently run out. Torn or heavily marked bills are routinely refused.
  • 👟
Pack two types of footwear. Water sandals with grip (Chacos, Keens) for wet landings and snorkeling; sturdy trail shoes for jagged volcanic lava. Flip-flops alone will not work on basalt rock.
  • 🧴
Reef-safe sunscreen only. Standard chemical sunscreens are harmful to marine life and frowned upon by park authorities. Use mineral (zinc oxide) reef-safe SPF. The equatorial sun is intense — cover up with UV-rated rash guards.
  • 🐢
Keep 2 metres from all wildlife. Park rules require a minimum 2 m (6 ft) distance from every animal — even if a sea lion pup swims right up to you. No touching, no feeding. Violations carry steep fines and can get your guide's licence revoked.
  • ✈️
Verify your park fees before you fly. The Galapagos National Park entrance fee is $200 USD per adult (raised from $100 in August 2024). Many expedition cruises pre-pay this — confirm with your operator before departure to avoid surprises at Baltra or San Cristobal airport.
