Founded in 1650 as a royal fortress, Fredericia surprises with pristine ramparts, a Blue Flag beach minutes from the pier, and one of Denmark's most walkable town grids — all right off the ship.
Ships dock at Kastelshavnen pier right alongside the old fortress — no tender, no bus required.
💡 Pro move: Denmark is virtually cashless — major credit/debit cards accepted everywhere including taxis and market stalls.
All cruise ships dock alongside at Kastelshavnen; no tender is used.

Most highlights are walkable, but a trip to Middelfart's Bridgewalking or a train ride to Odense rewards those who range farther.
Stroll the massive star-shaped earthworks — some of the best-preserved Renaissance fortifications in Northern Europe. The Landsoldaten (Brave Soldier) statue at Prinsens Port is the world's first monument to the common soldier, commemorating the 1849 Battle of Fredericia.
Find Fredericia walking tours →Walk across the top of the old Little Belt Bridge 60 metres above the water between Fredericia and Middelfart — one of Denmark's most exhilarating activities with panoramic strait views.
Find Bridgewalking tours →Hop the regional train for 30 minutes to reach Odense, birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. Visit the H.C. Andersen Museum, the old town, and the lively street-food market.
Find Odense day trip tours →A Blue Flag beach 15 minutes' walk from the pier — white sand, shallow calm water, sea kayaks, beach volleyball, and a striking circular wooden bathing jetty (Den Runde Bro).
Find Fredericia beach excursions →Explore Fredericia's multicultural founding — Huguenot and Jewish refugees, Danish military history, and the unique grid fortress plan — through well-curated exhibits and a preserved textile workshop.
Find Fredericia museum tours →The fortress grid makes Fredericia almost impossible to get lost in — every street is straight and short.
From the pier, walk along the waterfront to the Prinsens Port gate, climb the grass ramparts, follow the top of the earthworks to the north gate, descend and cut through the grid to Gothersgade for coffee or smørrebrød.
Head south along the waterfront from the pier past the Kastellet ruins to reach Østerstrand beach. The circular wooden jetty Den Runde Bro is the landmark — ideal for a swim or a sit in the sun.
