One of the Galápagos' oldest and most enigmatic islands, Floreana blends extraordinary wildlife — flamingos, sea turtles, reef sharks — with a stranger-than-fiction 1930s mystery that still isn't solved. Almost exclusively visited by small expedition ships.
There is no cruise pier on Floreana. Your ship anchors offshore and uses pangas (rigid inflatables) to ferry passengers to three separate visitor sites.
💡 Pro move: Water shoes or Keens/Chacos are ideal — you'll need both wet-landing capability and grip on jagged lava trails.
Floreana has no deep-water pier; all expedition vessels anchor and use pangas for transfers to separate landing sites around the island.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Expedition cruise ships (most operators) | Anchor offshore — pangas to Post Office Bay, Cormorant Point, or Puerto Velasco Ibarra📍 | Tendered |
| Small yachts & charter vessels | Anchor off Puerto Velasco Ibarra (Black Beach) or in the Post Office Bay area📍 | Tendered |
Floreana visits are immersive half-day or full-day affairs combining wildlife walks, snorkeling, and the island's famous postal tradition — all guided within the National Park.
Since 1793, sailors have left unstamped postcards in a barrel at Post Office Bay, trusting fellow travelers to hand-deliver them. Today's visitors continue the tradition — dig through the barrel for cards near your hometown, take them to deliver personally, and leave your own.

Find Galápagos wildlife tours →Corona del Diablo — a partially submerged eroded volcanic cone — is among the best snorkel sites in the entire Galápagos. White-tip reef sharks, sea lions, eagle rays, sea turtles, and dense schools of tropical fish swirl through the current-rich crater.
Find Galápagos snorkeling tours →A bumpy 8 km chiva (open-air truck) ride into Floreana's lush highlands (Asilo de la Paz) brings you to the island's only freshwater spring, the historic pirate caves used by 17th–18th century buccaneers and whalers, and a tortoise reserve where you can see giant Galápagos tortoises up close.
Find Galápagos highlands tours →A short panga ride from Floreana brings you to Champion Islet, another excellent snorkel and dive site with sea lions, penguins, marine iguanas, and Floreana mockingbirds on the rocky shore.
Find Galápagos day tours →Walking opportunities on Floreana are limited to guided trails at each visitor site — the three main sites are accessible only by panga, not on foot from each other.
The tiny settlement of Puerto Velasco Ibarra — Floreana's only village of ~170 residents — is walkable end to end in minutes. Stop at the Pension Wittmer for a cold beer or fresh juice and a glimpse of the island's founding family history.
