Étretat, Normandy, France

Monet painted them. Arsène Lupin hid secrets in them. The chalk arches and needle-rock of Étretat are among France's most dramatic coastal sights — and entirely worth the 40-minute drive from Le Havre.

Getting Ashore

Étretat has no port — your ship docks at Le Havre and you travel overland to the village.

Getting from Le Havre to Étretat

  • 1
Ship docks at Le Havre (Roger Meunier Pier)All cruise ships arrive at Le Havre's pier — no tender required. The port is about 30 km (18 miles) from Étretat, roughly a 40-minute drive on the D940 coastal road.
  • 2
Cruise line excursion (recommended)The easiest option guarantees your return time. Most lines offer a half-day Étretat excursion, often combined with the Normandy beaches or Honfleur.
  • 3
Taxi or private driverTaxis wait at the port. Expect €60–€80 each way. Book a fixed return time — taxis are scarce in Étretat itself. Private drivers (pre-booked) give more flexibility.
  • 4
Public bus from Le HavreBus Ligne 13 from Le Havre Gare Routière (city center) runs to Étretat in about 1 hour for around €3–5. Check timetables carefully — missing a bus can mean missing the ship.

💡 Pro move: Allow at least 2.5 hours to return to the ship from Étretat. Traffic on the D940 backs up badly in summer afternoons.

Insider Tips

  • 🥾
Wear sturdy shoes. The pebble beach is ankle-rolling without proper footwear, and the cliff paths are steep. Flip-flops or heels will ruin your day.
  • 🌊
Check the tide before entering the arches. At low tide you can walk through the cave at the base of d'Aval — beautiful, but the tide returns fast and has trapped tourists against the cliffs.
  • Leave Étretat by 3 PM if your ship sails at 6. The D940 back to Le Havre clogs badly in summer — what's a 40-minute drive can become 90 minutes.
  • 💶
Cash is useful but cards work most places. Small village restaurants may prefer cash; the ATM in the village center is often busy during peak hours.
  • 🌬️
Bring a windbreaker even in summer — the Channel wind on the clifftops is relentless and cold regardless of the forecast.
