Insider Tips

  • 🥾
Waterproof boots are mandatory. Sandy Bay is a wet landing — you may wade through shallow surf. Knee-high rubber boots are ideal; gaiters help in tussock.
  • 🌦️
Weather changes fast. Subantarctic conditions can shift within minutes. Bring waterproof layers regardless of morning sunshine — wind chill is severe.
  • 🦭
Sea lions have right of way. They are large, fast, and unpredictable. Always follow guide instructions and never block their path to the sea.
  • 💰
No money needed on the island. There are zero facilities, shops, or services. Everything is included through your expedition ship.
  • 📸
Bring long lens + wide angle. Wildlife is extremely close, so both focal lengths are useful. Protect gear from salt spray and sudden rain.
