Getting Ashore

Edinburgh has two cruise arrival points — larger ships dock at Leith's Ocean Terminal, while some vessels tender passengers ashore at South Queensferry beneath the Forth Bridges. Either way, the city centre is 30–45 minutes by shuttle or taxi.

Leith or South Queensferry — then into the city

  • 1
Leith (most cruise ships — docked)Large vessels berth at Leith's Ocean Terminal cruise dock. A free or paid shuttle typically runs to the city centre; taxis are also available dockside. The Royal Yacht Britannia is berthed here at Ocean Terminal — worth a visit if you're tight on time.
  • 2
South Queensferry (tender port)Smaller ships anchor in the Firth of Forth and tender passengers to South Queensferry pier, directly beneath the three Forth Bridges. The village is charming, but Edinburgh city is ~30 min away by taxi or the 43 bus.
  • 3
Getting into Edinburgh cityFrom Leith: city centre buses (route 22/35) or taxis (~£12–15). From South Queensferry: taxis (~£25–30) or the 43 bus to St Andrew Square. Lothian Buses accept contactless payment.
  • 4
City Hop-on Hop-off busesEdinburgh's open-top tour buses cover the major sights and depart from Waverley Bridge near the train station — a practical way to cover the Royal Mile, Holyrood, and Calton Hill without navigating on foot.

💡 Pro move: Confirm with your ship whether you're calling at Leith or South Queensferry — the experience differs significantly. South Queensferry tenders add ~30–45 min to shore time each way.

Insider Tips

  • 🌦️
Pack a waterproof. Edinburgh weather is famously changeable — rain can arrive fast even in summer. A light waterproof jacket fits in any day bag and makes cobblestone climbs much more pleasant.
  • 🚌
Confirm your berth before you go. Leith and South Queensferry are 12 miles apart. Check the ship's daily programme — it changes the logistics of your whole day.
  • 🏰
Pre-book Edinburgh Castle. It's Scotland's most popular attraction and sells out, especially in summer. Book tickets online before you sail or join your ship's excursion — same-day queues are long.
  • 💷
Cards accepted everywhere. Scotland is card-friendly. You'll rarely need cash, though a few castle gift shops and small cafés on the Royal Mile still prefer it.
  • 👟
Wear comfortable shoes. The Royal Mile and Old Town are heavily cobbled; heels are a bad idea. Arthur's Seat requires proper walking shoes or boots.
  • Britannia is steps from Leith pier. If your ship docks at Leith, the Royal Yacht Britannia at Ocean Terminal is a five-minute walk — a great first stop before heading into town.
