Getting Ashore

Ships anchor in the sheltered Bay of Douarnenez and run tenders to Port de Rosmeur, the historic fishing harbour directly below the town.

Arriving by Tender

  • 1
Tender to Port de RosmeurThe ship's tender boats land at the quay of Port de Rosmeur. Boarding times are announced on board; check for any queue management by pier letter or deck.
  • 2
Climb into townFrom the quay, the town centre is a 5–10 minute walk up steep cobblestone streets. Wear comfortable shoes — the gradient catches people off guard.
  • 3
Pick up tide tablesIf you plan to visit Île Tristan on foot, stop at the tourist office near the port for the day's tide timetable. Timing is critical — you can get stranded.

💡 Pro move: Tendering is weather-dependent. In rough conditions the ship may cancel or limit tender runs. Confirm ashore time with the ship's daily programme.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Douarnenez has no dedicated cruise terminal; all ships anchor in the bay and tender passengers to the quayside.

Insider Tips

  • 🌊
Check the tide table before heading to Île Tristan. The sandbar path floods quickly — pick up the day's schedule at the tourist office near the port.
  • 👟
Wear proper shoes. Douarnenez is steep and cobblestoned throughout. Flip-flops are a recipe for a twisted ankle on the climb from the tender pier.
  • 🥐
Eat a kouign-amann here — this is where it was invented. Any good boulangerie in town will have one; it tastes best still slightly warm.
  • 🎣
Pick up sardine tins as souvenirs. Douarnenez was once France's sardine capital, and illustrated vintage-style tins make excellent (and delicious) gifts.
  • 🌦
Brittany's weather is famously changeable. Sunshine, rain, and wind can all happen within the same hour. Bring a light waterproof layer no matter the forecast.
