Insider Tips

  • 🌧️
Pack layers and waterproofs. Donegal weather can deliver all four seasons in a single day. A windproof jacket is essential, especially at Slieve League.
  • 🚕
Taxis are scarce — book ahead. Rural Donegal has limited taxi supply on cruise days. Arrange transport at the pier information point before heading into town, or pre-book through your cruise line.
  • 💶
Carry some cash. Most shops and restaurants accept cards, but small craft stalls, the shuttle bus, and the Slieve League visitor car park may be cash-only. €20 in euros is plenty.
  • 🧥
Buy Donegal Tweed in Donegal Town. The most authentic source is Magee 1866 on The Diamond — a living institution making tweed cloth since 1866. It's worth the 28 km trip if you have time.
  • 🍲
Eat the chowder. Killybegs is Ireland's largest fishing port — the seafood is hyper-fresh. Try the chowder and fish and chips at the harbor-front casual spots for a genuine local meal.
