Devil's Island, Salvation Islands, French Guiana

Three jungle islands steeped in colonial infamy — ships anchor off Île Royale where crumbling penal colony buildings sleep beneath the palms, while the notorious Île du Diable looms just offshore, close enough to see but too dangerous to land.

Getting Ashore

Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to Île Royale — the largest and most accessible of the three Salvation Islands. Île du Diable (Devil's Island) itself is typically off-limits due to dangerously strong currents.

Tender to Île Royale

  • 1
Anchor and tenderYour ship anchors in the lee of Île Royale. Ship tenders run passengers to the island's small concrete landing jetty. Seas here can be choppy — check conditions before committing to a tender run, especially in rough weather.
  • 2
Île du Diable: view, don't landDevil's Island itself is separated from Île Royale by a narrow channel with powerful currents. Landings there are almost never permitted and are genuinely dangerous. You will get excellent views and photographs from Île Royale's northern shore — that is the honest experience on offer.
  • 3
Explore on footÎle Royale is compact and walkable. The ruins, chapel, former warden's house (now a small inn and café), and coastal viewpoints are all connected by well-worn paths through dense palms and jungle.

💡 Pro move: French Guiana is an overseas territory of France. Euros are the currency. There is minimal tourist infrastructure: one small café/hotel and a few information panels. Bring cash, water, insect repellent, and sturdy shoes.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

All vessels anchor offshore — there is no cruise pier; tenders or Zodiacs bring passengers to Île Royale's small jetty.

Top Excursions

The Salvation Islands are about history, atmosphere, and wildlife — not organized tours. Most visitors explore independently on foot once ashore.

History

Penal Colony Ruins of Île Royale

The French penal colony that operated from 1852 to 1953 left behind a haunting landscape: cell blocks, the solitary confinement building, guards' quarters, and administrative buildings slowly being reclaimed by the jungle. Alfred Dreyfus was held here; Henri Charrière's Papillon made the colony world-famous.

Chapel of Île Royale

The small convict-built chapel on Île Royale, with its simple whitewashed interior, is one of the best-preserved structures on the island. A quiet, atmospheric stop amid the ruins.

Wildlife

Agoutis, Monkeys & Seabirds

With no predators, Île Royale's wildlife is remarkably tame. Large agoutis graze the ruins, capuchin monkeys move through the trees, macaws and other tropical birds call from the canopy, and seabirds wheel along the cliffs. Bring a camera.

Views of Île du Diable

From the northern tip of Île Royale you can look directly across the narrow, churning channel to Île du Diable — the island where Dreyfus spent five years in a small hut. It's overgrown, unreachable, and all the more evocative for it.

Coastal Walk & Cliff Paths

Île Royale's perimeter paths wind along dramatic rocky coastline battered by Atlantic swell, through coconut palms and jungle. The views across to Île Saint-Joseph and the South American mainland are striking on a clear day.

Self-Guided Walks & Hikes

Île Royale is small enough to cover on foot in a few hours — the ruins, chapel, and coastal viewpoints are all connected by a network of jungle paths.

Ruins & Chapel Loop

~3 km · 1.5–2 hrs · easy–moderate

From the tender jetty, walk up to the main penal colony buildings — cell blocks, the solitary confinement ward, the former director's villa — then continue to the chapel and back along the ridge path. Wildlife is abundant throughout.

Insider Tips

  • Devil's Island is a view, not a landing. Almost no one lands on Île du Diable — the currents between the islands are treacherous. Your visit is on Île Royale. Manage expectations and embrace the haunting atmosphere.
  • 🦟
Insect repellent is non-negotiable. French Guiana is equatorial jungle. Mosquitoes and biting insects are relentless — bring DEET-based repellent and wear long sleeves if you have them.
  • 💧
Bring water and snacks. There is one small café/hotel on Île Royale (Auberge des Îles du Salut) with limited food and drinks. Don't count on it being open or stocked — bring your own supplies from the ship.
  • 🌧️
French Guiana is tropical. Expect heat, humidity, and the possibility of sudden heavy rain any time of year. A light rain layer and sun hat are both worth packing.
  • 💶
Euros only, cash preferred. French Guiana uses the Euro. The café may accept cards but don't rely on it — bring a small amount of cash for any purchases ashore.
  • 🐒
Don't feed the wildlife. Agoutis, monkeys, and macaws are bold and curious but they're wild animals. Watch and photograph freely — just keep your snacks secured or the locals will help themselves.
