Insider Tips

  • 💵
Buy vouchers aboard ship. There is no ATM on the island. Cruise lines sell pre-denominated AUD vouchers (A$25/50/100) before arrival — pick these up the evening before your call.
  • 🤿
Bring your own mask and fins if possible. Rental gear is available but limited supply means early tenders get the best fit. This reef genuinely rewards snorkeling.
  • ☀️
Sun protection is critical. Open sandy beach with no shade trees over most of the shoreline — wear a rash guard, apply SPF 50+, and bring a hat. The tropical sun is intense.
  • 🐢
Visit the turtle sanctuary early — it's the best unique experience on the island and the guides are informative. The turtle season runs roughly November–April (nesting through hatchling releases), so calls in those months may coincide with releases.
  • 🌧️
Weather can change fast. Milne Bay sits in a wet tropical zone. A light rain layer and dry bag for your phone/camera are smart packing choices year-round.
