Insider Tips

  • 🚂
Take the Kleinbahn: The narrow-gauge railway from the pier to town costs just a few euros and is essential — the harbor sits about 7 km from the town center, far too long to walk.
  • 🌊
Wadden Sea timing: Guided mudflat walks only run at low tide. Check the tide table and book a licensed guide before arrival — solo walking on the tidal flats can be dangerous.
  • 💶
Cash still king: Many beach chair rentals, small cafés, and market stalls on Borkum are cash-only. Bring euros.
  • 🌬
Dress for the North Sea: Even in summer, Borkum's wind can make temperatures feel 5–8°C colder than the thermometer reads. Pack a windproof layer.
  • 🦭
Seal season peaks: Harbour seals pup in June–July; grey seals in December–January. Both species are visible year-round but numbers are highest in season.
